SECTION P:

THE TOOLBOX, CHEMICAL SHELF:

BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMICALS:

Anti-Seize Lubricants:

xx1) Fastener ANTI-SEIZE PASTE. Yeah, it's smelly and makes a silvery mess on your fingers, but this stuff is a life-saver for any true wrencher, because it prevents problems down the road. Use it on any metal fastener that does not require a "loctite" thread-locker material to be used. This means on just about every fastener that is carb, engine case, or suspension-related! (except for carb upper and lower rack-mount screws and butterfly valve screws, which do require the use of a thread-lock fluid). If you think that it might, sometime, in the future, need to come off: use anti-seize compound! NOTE: the "base" metal material used in the different anti-seize pastes below do not determine what type of fastener to use such pastes on; it merely signifies what base material is used to create the anti-seize paste. You can use any "based" anti-seize paste on any type of fastener and metal.

NOTE: the use of anti-seize compounds will result in a TORQUE-MULTIPLYING EFFECT……..the result of a reduction in friction between the threaded contact points……and thus fasteners treated with anti-seize compound should have their torque values reduced by at least 10-15% when installed into steel material, and up to 25% into aluminum materials or other “soft” metals” (such as spark plugs into cylinder heads, or almost any other type of fastener into the engine) …… note that this rule applies only to service manual torque specifications on fasteners that are not indicated to be treated with anti-seize fluid by the factory …. if the factory manual specifies the use of an anti-seize coating, then the specified torque value for that fitting already takes into account the “reduced torque” necessary.

$ 11.95

Greases:

b4) Aftermarket pure SILICONE GREASE----this is the proper product to use when installing any rubber-based o-ring or seal or paper gasket. Silicone doesn't affect rubber, provides good seal lubrication, can also be used as a "glue" to hold gaskets and seals in place during installation, and to aid in the re-assembly of components.

HCP28407 Aftermarket o-ring, oil seal, and gasket installation pure SILICONE GREASE. This small 5-gram (1/6-oz) snap-open "pillow packet" is enough for a few small oil seals, dozens of o-rings, and the like. Each:
$ 4.95

HCP1714 Aftermarket o-ring, oil seal, and gasket installation pure SILICONE GREASE. This generous 14-gram (1/2-oz.) tub goes a long way, because just like Brylcreem, "just a little dab will do ya'!" Each:
$ 9.95

NOTE: the following product(s) can only be shipped via ground transport (which thus eliminates the postal Priority Mail, postal Express Mail, or private carrier Expedited levels of service for this item) and cannot (and will not----don't even ask!) be shipped outside of the continental USA. Additionally, there may be a per-package weight or quantity restriction, and thus multiple-unit orders of this product may have to be shipped in separate packages and will incur additional shipping charges.

HCP20861 Aftermarket industrial-strength SILICONE LUBE, in a large 16-ounce aerosol can. Concentrated silicone sprays on wet, and then dries to a super-slick, clear, non-greasy, non-staining finish. Resists moisture, stops squeeks, prevents binding on all types of surfaces (wood, metal, plastic, rubber, even fabrics). Won't wash away, protect against rust and corrosion, stable from -100 degrees up to 500-F. This fluid is also a great choice for use as installation lubricant for o-rings, oil seals, etc. (similar to our HCP1714 or HCP28407 silicone grease paste) or wherever petroleum-based lubricants are not recommended.

$ 17.95

et14) Aftermarket electrical connector CONDUCTIVE GREASE coats and protects metal terminal connectors from exposure to air, thus preventing oxidation, the killer of electrical systems. Unlike the di-electric grease listed above, which is an insulator (non-conductive), this carbon-based grease is electrically conductive and has multiple applications (such as battery terminal posts (internally), frame grounds, etc.).

HCP27923 Aftermarket packet of CONDUCTIVE GREASE, single use 2-gram packet, enough to do a few light bulbs, terminals, etc. Even tiny amounts (that you can barely see) will create minimal electrical resistance, so be careful with this stuff around capacitors and such. It gets everywhere, will stain your hands and clothing and take three days to wash off, and smells like some of the worst goop you've ever smelled. Use a toothpick for application. Don't eat it. Wear gloves. 2-gram pouch goes a long way.
$ 3.95

et26) Aftermarket electrical device SWITCH LUBRICANT is a specially formulated, electrically non-conductive penetrating lube that is recommended on control switch turn signal contacts and headlight switching contacts. 10-gram squeeze tube has applicator tip for precision use.

$ 4.95

Super-Penetrant Fluids and Lubricants:

Sometimes, the toughest part of working on a vehicle is battling the effects of time: seized fasteners, caused by rust, corrosion, and other factors, turns what should be a 5-minute effort into a 50-minute (or more) chore, complete with rounded-off, ruined, or snapped fasteners, e-z outs, heli-coil inserts, and more.........and that's just not right.

While the proper use of our various Anti-Seize products will prevent these nightmares from occurring in the future, you're stuck in the here-and-now, and the best way to handle these obstacles is to have the proper tools at the stand-by; and in the case of fastener seizure, the proper "tool" is a can or two of our SUPER PENETRATING LUBRICANTS at the ready; a couple of squirts, a little bit of time-----perhaps some heat for those really nasty situations----and you're on your way again, hopefully not too much worse for the experience.....

Great for use on all fasteners, fork tube cap bolts, intake and exhaust manifolds bolts, studs, and nuts, lock cylinder tumblers, or anywhere an un-cooperative fastener can be found. Can even be used to help un-seize frozen engines!

Be aware that these products are not your typical, garden-variety, run-of-the-mill "retail" type products; these are designed an used as industrial- and military-strength products, meaning they have special formulations that include a dollop more of the "good stuff" within them to solve the toughest seizure problems imaginable (the "good stuff" ingredients cost more, and it is those compounds that are left out of or reduced in concentration in "retail" level consumer products).

HCP10331 Aftermarket standard-duty PENETRATING LUBRICANT, in a generous 16-ounce aerosol can. Oil-based lubricant penetrates down into spaces of one-millionth of an inch to handle the most reluctant seizures. Actually dissolves the rust and corrosion that causes the seizure; lubricates and displaces moisture to prevent rust re-formation. This product is what we use and recommend for freeing stuck fork tube cap bolts and other such challenging fasteners.
$ 24.95

HCP11974 Aftermarket super-duty PENETRATING LUBRICANT, in a generous 13-ounce aerosol can. Same as our standard-duty formula above, but also includes graphite to not only enhance and speed up the penetrant action, but also gets down into the pores of the metal for the greatest possible lubrication possible. The cat's-meow of penetrating fluids, can even be used to un-seize frozen engines or as an engine assembly lube! This fluid is also a great choice for use as a drive cable lubricant.
$ 26.95

HCP10333 Aftermarket extreme-duty PENETRATING LUBRICANT, in a generous 16-ounce aerosol can. Same as our standard-duty formula above, but also includes liquid silicone to enhance and speed up the penetrant action. This product is also an exceptional choice for use as a control-cable lubricant.

Brake System Chemicals:

bst18) Aftermarket brake caliper and master cylinder ASSEMBLY GREASES, these "ultimate" greases are what professionals use when performing component re-assembly.

Our HCP24612 or HCP26785 ultra-high temp (2800-F) melting point insures that grease will remain in place and not melt. Smear a ultra thin coating of this ultra-viscous grease on the caliper slider pins and the back of the caliper anti-rattle shims to insure a smooth, chatter-free system. Also high recommended for re-assembly of all master cylinder metal-to-metal contact components.

The HCP24613 or HCP26786 red grease for rubber seals is a castor-lime based lubricant made specifically for hydraulic braking systems, and which allows for the free movement of the seals, ease of assembly, and will prevent water entry It’s safe for use with all natural and synthetic rubber materials, will not cause rubber to swell or dissolve as other types of grease can, and is both water- and solvent-resistant.

The HCP24592 copper anti-seize is for use on mounting bolts and any threaded fasteners used in caliper or master cylinder mounting, brake lever pivot bolts, etc.

HCP26785 Aftermarket tub of CERAMIC ULTRA-TEMP ASSEMBLY GREASE, This 4-gram tub is enough for two calipers (or more, if you're very frugal!) or a dozen master cylinders. HINT: there’s a puddle of fluid under your wheel, in the area of the brake caliper. Unless the source of the leak is fully obvious, how can you tell if it’s brake fluid of fork oil? Try to mix a few drops of water into the fluid; fork oil (or engine/gear oil) won’t mix and the water will “ball up”; brake fluid will integrate with water and absorb the water.

Cable Lubricants:

cm2) Aftermarket CABLE LUBRICANT. For the longest cable life and less drag, cables should be lubed at least once a year.

Also, since the question gets asked quite a bit, here's the answer!:

Cable lubricant is specially formulated to not attract or hold dirt or grit, as those materials will act like "sandpaper" inside your cable housing and will "file" away at the cable itself, shortening its life. Oil and grease do attract such materials, and thus are not an ideal candidates for a cable lubricant.

Also, be aware that "WD-40" and related products are not actually lubricants, they are moisture-dispersing agents, and their "slick" feel is just a by-product of the carrier agent, which eventually dries off. The "WD" part of product name stands for "Water Dispersant", and that is what it truly is (which is what makes it such a great anti-rust fogging spray).

Radiator Coolant:

The use of the proper, non-corrosive and compatible radiator COOLANT is especially important on aluminum engines, as many of the typical additives in standard coolant products contain chemicals that will lead to the corrosion of aluminum and the build-up of hard deposits that will reduce the cooling effectiveness of your system.

We offer both a conventional ethylene-glycol based coolant and an environmentally-friendly, non-poisonous propylene-glycol based fluid, both pre-mixed at a proper ratio, to provide both temperature protection from 26 degree below zero to 265-F and will not harm or clog your expensive X engine!

The factory recommends a coolant change every 24 months, using an ethylene-glycol based coolant (or equivalent) with anti-corrosion inhibitors for aluminum system, mixed 50% with water. The fluid capacity of the entire system is 2.5 quarts, and another 0.5 quart for the reservoir......so a single gallon bottle of pre-mixed coolant will do you well.

You can review the proper coolant flush procedures at:

Engine Oils:

Which type and brand should you use? Great question! Here's some really good answers:

NOTE: Yamaha specifies the use of API "SE" or "SF" grade oil in all XJ models, but that is based on the original (at that time) automotive motor oil standards.....which, as the above article notes, are no longer valid in the current lubrication industry environment and classifications. Therefore we recommend that the oil you choose should meet or exceed the JASO "MA" duty rating, and all of the oils below exceed that standard.

Do not EVER use synthetic oils unless they are specifically designed for motorcycle engines using wet clutch systems (as these bikes do use), as you will end up with a slipping clutches (both drive clutch and especially the starter clutch). Additionally, do not use "automotive" grade oils that have friction modifiers (reduced-friction additives) as these will cause the same problems.

The factory recommends the use of 10W30 oil when the outside temperature will never exceed 60-F, or 20W40 if the outside temperature is always above 40-F. Unfortunately, 20W40 oil is not readily available anymore, but there is not an issue with using a straight 40W oil, or 10W40, 15W40, or 20W50 formulations instead.

All XJ-series engines require somewhere from 2.5 quarts to 3.0 quarts for an oil change (depending on whether the filter is replaced or not) except for the 1100 engines, which require slightly under a gallon to accomplish an oil and filter change.

Engine Oil System Additives, Lubricants, and Oil Flush:

When storing an engine for a long period of time.........such as during the winter off-season.......it is beneficial to protect the internal combustion chamber surfaces with a protective film of oil to prevent rust. Our aerosol FOGGING OIL products makes that a quick and simple task.

For engines that may have suffered from poor (or unknown) maintenance or oil change routines, it can be useful to perform a solvent-enhanced ENGINE OIL FLUSH routine.....adding a specific amount of a solvent to the engine oil, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature, and then draining the oil, re-filling, and draining again (to insure that all solvent has been removed).

HCP11475 Aftermarket aerosol FOGGING OIL, top end lubricant coats, clings, and protects metal surfaces against rust and prevents ring seizure when an extended period of non-use is expected (winter storage). Spray directly into cylinders (thru the spark plug holes), rotate the engine over a few turns with the starter motor (but with plugs still removed-----do not allow the engine to start!) to spread the oil about, and your pistons, cylinders, rings will live happily ever after...............or, at least until you start up the engine next spring! 12-ounce can will fog many a cylinder, exhaust system component, fuel tank, etc.
$ 14.95

HCP20849 Aftermarket ENGINE OIL ENEMA TREATMENT, the use of approximately 8-10 ounces of this product --- added to the crankcase before an oil change --- helps to loosen up accumulated crud and debris inside the crankcase, and thus allows it to be washed out and drained away with a fluid and filter change. NOTE: we advise that you add this oil treatment to an already warm engine, and then start and run the engine for approximately 15 minutes or so at idle, blipping the throttle occasionally (make sure you have a fan blowing on the engine to prevent overheating!). This will circulate the solvents throughout the engine and transmission fully, allowing it to be more effective.

Although some sources recommend adding this product to the oil and then driving around for 30 miles or so (in order to fully circulate the solvent), we prefer to not put any load on the engine while this product is in the oil. Additionally, since this product may cause engine gasket or seal deterioration (if left in the oil for an extended period of time), our usage recommendations are:

a) this oil flush be added to the crankcase, and follow the recommended usage time as listed above.

b) the engine oil and flush mix be drained completely, and then an oil and filter change be performed as usual.

c) this new fresh oil and filter be used for approximately 200 miles or so, and then an oil change and filter replacement be performed again, thus insuring that all of the oil flush is completely removed.

The above procedure may seem a bit pricey, but a gallon of oil and a filter is quite a bit cheaper----and a lot less aggravating!----than having to replace leaking engine seals or gaskets.

Recommended usage interval: every 12,500 miles (or every 5th oil change).

16-ounce can is the right size to accommodate 2 complete engine flush procedures.

Engine Cleaners:

If any of the above oil products have escaped from inside of your engine and made a mess on the outside of your powerplant, then this spray-on, hose-off ENGINE CLEANER is what you'll need to cut through the toughest of grease, grime, and baked and caked-on oil. Highly concentrated, easy to use, does not attack painted or clear-coated surfaces, and does a great job.

HCP12354 Aftermarket water-soluble (rinse-off) ENGINE DEGREASER and CLEANER, in a 16-ounce non-aerosol can. Best to transfer into an old windex spray bottle (etc.) and use with a spray nozzle. Each:
$ 21.95

Fuel System Additives:

HCP20849 Aftermarket fuel system FLUSH AND STABILIZER TREATMENT, the use of approximately 1 ounce per gallon of fuel --- added to the gas --- helps to loosen up accumulated crud and debris inside the petcock and the carbs, and thus allows it to be dissolved and run thru the engine. It also acts as a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel breakdown and varnish formation......will stabilize fuel for up to two years. Using it during your "winterizing" procedure will help prevent the dreaded clogged-carbs syndrome when you go to start up your bike when springs rolls around. NOTE: the recommended dosage of 1 ounce per gallon will require a different amount per bike model, since all XJ's have different sized tanks. Do not follow the "more-is-better" philosophy when using this product! It is not unusual for the engine to produce a whitish-colored exhaust while this additive is being combusted.

By the way, the best fuel stabilizer to use, if you can easily find it, is race gas…..expensive, but it works:

Steering and Suspension System Chemicals:

FORK OIL:

Unlike motor oil or gear oil, fork oil's major purpose is not lubrication.....rather, it acts as part of the suspension system, providing both damping and rebound control functions. The different "weight" or viscosity of fork oils allows you to modify the ride and handling characteristics of your bike in a fairly simple way.

And yes, it IS a lubricant also!

Although many people----including, unbelievably, Yamaha itself----recommends the use of engine motor oil as a substitute for fork oil, this is not a very good idea. Engine oils (or any multi-viscosity oil) uses additives and detergents that, while wonderful in for their intended purposes inside an engine block, tranny case, or rear drive unit, are not such a good idea inside forks. Forks operate at a much lower temperature and temperature RANGE than engine and drivetrains do, and thus do not need all those additives. And fork oil also tends to contain higher percentages of molybdenum disulfide and anti-foaming agents than engine or gear oil, both of which are very important to proper fork operation.

As a small example.......most motor oils are of a multi-viscosity nature (such as 10W30) which change their viscosity in relation to their temperature (thin when cool, thicker as they warm). A very necessary and useful feature for an engine, where you do not want your oil thinning out as the engine warms up. Not such a good idea for your suspension----unless for some reason you WANT your handling characteristics to change (get stiffer) as the forks heat up!

Proper fork oil levels and scheduled change intervals are important for fork performance and fork part longevity.....water contamination, as well as particulate wear will accumulate in fork oil, and since there is no oil filtering mechanism within your forks, the only way to get the grit and gunk out (before it chews up your oil seals and slider bearings!) is to change your fork fluid regularly. Yamaha recommends a fork fluid change every 10,000 miles or 24 months (all models except 700's), or every 16,000 miles or 24 months (all XJ700 and XJ750-X models). If you just bought a used bike, we recommend you do a fluid change as soon as possible, because just like other routine maintenance tasks (besides engine oil changes), this is one that has very likely been ignored for the last 10-12 years!

Fork oil capacities and recommended oil viscosity are as follows. The amounts listed are per fork tube and only when using stock, original springs:

XJ550 Maxim: 272cc or 9.20 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

XJ550 Seca: 230cc or 7.78 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 262cc or 8.86 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1982-84 XJ650 Maxim: 278cc or 9.40 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1982 XJ650RJ Seca: 236cc or 7.98 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil. Fork oil level is specified as 400mm (15.75") below the top of the tube without the spring installed, forks fully collapsed.

1982 XJ650LJ Turbo: 238cc or 8.04 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil. Fork oil level is specified as 180mm (7.09") below the top of the tube without the spring installed, forks fully collapsed.

1983 XJ650LK Turbo: unknown.

1985-86 XJ700 non-X: 383cc or 12.96 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1985-86 XJ700-X: 389cc or 13.16 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1982 XJ750 Maxim: 257cc or 8.69 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil.

1983 XJ750 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 257cc or 8.69 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil. NOTE: owner's manual states that the fork oil capacity is 278cc (9.40 fluid ounces). It is unknown which measurement is correct.

1981-83 XJ750 Seca: 309cc or 10.45 fluid ounces. 20W fork oil.

1983 XJ750 E-II Seca or 1984 XJ750RL Seca: 286cc or 9.67 fluid ounces. 5W fork oil. Fork oil level is specified as 168mm (6.61") below the top of the tube without the spring installed, forks fully collapsed.

1983 XJ900RK Seca: 286cc or 9.67 fluid ounces. 5W fork oil. Fork oil level is specified as 164mm (6.46") below the top of the tube without the spring installed, forks fully collapsed.

1982-84 XJ1100 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 210cc or 7.10 fluid ounces. 10W fork oil. Fork oil level is specified as 210mm (8.27") below the top of the tube without the spring installed, forks fully collapsed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the above fork oil VOLUMES are for use only when using the stock fork springs. The use of aftermarket performance front fork coil springs will change those volumes, since aftermarket springs are thicker than stock----and thus displace more oil. Using the stock oil fluid VOLUME with aftermarket fork springs is a sure way to OVERFILL your forks, with the very real possibility of blowing out fork seals.

Unlike with your engine oil, where a bit too much or too little oil volume in the crankcase is not really a significant concern, with fork oil, too much or too little can cause real problems (too much oil can result in blown oil seals and a stiff, harsh ride, while too little oil volume results in excessive foaming, a soft mushy ride with possible bottoming, and erratic fork performance and lots of front end "dive" upon braking).

A better way to determine the amount of fork oil that is needed and necessary is via the measurement of the fork oil LEVEL within the tubes.....sort of like measuring the oil level with a dipstick. Yamaha does not specify this level for all models; and in any case, if using aftermarket springs, the factory oil level recommendation is not always useful. The maximum oil level should be 5-1/2" (140mm) below the top of the inner fork tube, measured with all internal fork tube components installed EXCEPT FOR THE SPRINGS, and with the inner fork tube fully collapsed into the lower (outer) tube.

In order to be as accurate as possible, we recommend the use of a suitable measuring device, such as the HCP1728 oil level syringe listed further below.

And finally, the fork oil viscosity can be changed from the factory recommendations to give a softer or firmer ride.......the lower the viscosity, the thinner the oil, and the softer the ride (i.e. 5W oil is thinner than 10W which is thinner than 20W, etc.) In this regard, you would certainly be correct in thinking of fork oil as a suspension "tuning tool"! Note that a thicker oil viscosity will have much more effect on the fork "rebound" characteristics than it will on the fork compression dampening function.

ffo3) Red Line Oil products line of SYNTHETIC FORK OILS are some of the best, highest-performance fork oils developed specifically for this purpose. They provide exceptional shear lubrication, are highly resistant to any viscosity changes, and provide excellent seal lubrication as well as very high anti-foaming properties. All of these oils are completely compatible with each other, which means that different weights can safely be mixed with each other to create "custom-weights" of fork oil for the utmost in suspension tuning flexibility. NOTE: oils, if mixed for a different viscosity, should be done in a large enough batch to provide enough oil for both front forks. You do NOT want to be running different oil viscosity's in the left and right fork tubes!

Also, do not mix different brands, styles, or types of oils........you can only safely mix forks oils together from one manufacturer!

Plastic Body Parts Repair and Salvation Cement:

Modern chemistry to the rescue! Many of the plastic side covers on these XJ bikes use a rubber-mounting "peg" and "c-ear" design to provide the locating and secure attachment of the cover to the bike frame. Over the years, as the covers are removed and installed, the stressed areas of the covers break.......there goes the mounting peg, snap-=crackle-pop goes the c-shaped mounting ear area, or a split develops along the edge of the cover (and then grows and grows and grows......).

Well, here's the solution to those problems: a true modern miracle, this 2-part plastic bonding agent really, REALLY does bond thermoplastics back together again.....as strong or stronger than new. Simple, easy, and quick to use, each repair kit contains enough material to fix alot of broken side covers (or other plastic parts......fairings, airboxes, etc.). Instructions included.
