THE TOOL COUNTER:

TOOL RENTALS:

Typically, when performing very infrequent or one-time tasks, it is not cost-efficient to purchase all of the special tools you’ll need to perform the task just for your one bike. Don’t get us wrong, though: you do need to use the proper tool(s) for the job to get proper results! It’s just that these special tools can really eat into your maintenance and rebuild budget.

Our TOOL RENTAL PROGRAM allows you to have access to those special tools for an affordable rental rate, thus minimizing your investment and maximizing your results.

Here’s how it works: you “order” the tool(s) that you’ll need and pay the regular retail price (and shipping) for the tool. The tool(s) are then shipped to you just as a regular order, and we’ll note the date that the tools shipped to you. You then use the tools, taking whatever amount of time you need. Then, return the tool(s) to us, prepaid, and we’ll then refund you the full tool price minus your “time rented” fee.

Remember, your “time rented” fee is calculated from the day that we ship the tool until the day that the tool is received back to us from you (not the day that you ship it back). We receive incoming shipments 5 days a week, so if a tool is “returned” to us via the Post Office on a Saturday, it will be the following non-holiday Monday that we “receive” the tool back.

The only other restriction is that tools returned to us broken, damaged, inoperable, modified, or worn out in any way will not be accepted back, and will be returned to you (with additional shipping costs to apply) and no refund or credit issued. Thus we recommend that:

a) you treat rental tools as if you own them, since you will if you don’t treat them in a professional manner!

b) when you ship the tools to us, you insure them at their full value against any loss or damage during shipment. Claims for loss or damage against the carrier is the responsibility of the shipper (that’s you), not the recipient (that’s us). And since the “travel time” both to and from you is counted as “rental time”, we strongly suggest that you opt for the priority mail shipping option, as this will minimize the “travel time” and will typically reduce your overall cost.

c) you will need to provide us with the Package Tracking Service (“delivery confirmation” number) for your return shipment of the tool to us so we may document the return date to us.

Although these rules may seem strict, we hope you can understand the reality of the need to put such restrictions on the long-distance rental and use of these tools.

Please also note that, in the case of some tools ---- due to either their low retail price and/or the cost of return shipping ---- that it may not make sense to rent such tools for any extended period of time…….in other words, such tools only make sense to “rent” if you do so only when you are immediately prepared to use them (within a day or so of receipt of the tool) and have the ability to return the tool(s) to use immediately after you have finished using them. The most practical plan is to rent such tools associated with a specific task that you’ll be doing…..such as a fork rebuild….at the same time you are purchasing your fork rebuild parts. In this manner, the tools will be shipped to you with almost minimal shipping charges (they’ll ride with your other parts that you’ve ordered), so at least some of the cost of the tool rental will be absorbed in your regular parts order.

REVIEW: Tool Rental Terms and Conditions:

- you’ll pay the full price of the tool in advance….just like you were ordering it for “keeps”….and get refunded/credited when it is returned to us.

- the tool must be returned in working order or you have bought the tool! All of our tools are inspected to insure they are in proper operating condition before leaving our shop.

- the tool rental rate starts as of the day that we ship the too to youl, and ends on the day that we receive the tool back. Yes, this does mean that you are paying the rental rate while the tool is in transit. This is why small-dollar-value tools may not be a good idea to rent……..it may be more cost-effective for you to simply purchase the tool.

EXAMPLE:

You will be ordering and converting your bike from the stock oil filter system to our spin-on filter conversion system. You order the spin-on kit along with the tools needed to do the job:

HCP10299 Aftermarket deep-drive 30mm SOCKET, 1/2-drive thin-wall style that will work properly with the HCP1284 spin-on oil filter adapter kit that we offer. Because of the very close tolerances between the outside faces of the nut and the adapter plate recess, you'll need a very thin-wall socket to tighten this nut with. Chrome-plated, 12-point, 1-/2" drive.
Purchase Price: $ 39.95
Rental Rate: $ 1.25 per day

HCP22025 Aftermarket standard depth 32mm SOCKET, used to remove the special oil filter union bolt used on all XJ550 models, and on all factory-equipped oil-cooler systems used on 1984-85 FJ600, XJ650 Turbo, and XJ900 models. Chrome-plated, 6-point, 1/2" drive.
Purchase Price: $ 16.95
Rental Rate: $ 0.75 per day

HCP10300 Aftermarket 3/8"-to-1/2" DRIVE ADAPTER. For use with the HCP10298, HCP10299, HCP10530, HCP11336, HCP22025, or the HCP22947 sockets, and the 10mm and 12mm HCP10302 stud extractors included in the HCP10301 tool kit. Most people have the standard 3/8" drive ratchet wrenches in their tool kits already, and the larger 1/2" drive sockets can be used with those ratchets with this converter/adapter. Chrome-plated, 1/2" male drive, 3/8" female receiver.
Purchase Price:$ 12.95
Rental Rate: $ 0.25 per day when any of the 1/2” drive sockets above are also rented.

Your parts ship on the 11th, you receive them on the 14th, you do the install on the 16th, and get the rental tools into the mail back to us on the 17th. The rental tools are received by us on the 20th.

Thus you have 9 days (the 11th thru the 20th) worth of tool rental on each item.

When you initially rented the tools, you paid us:

HCP10299 Socket $ 39.95
HCP22025 Socket $ 16.95
HCP10300 Socket $ 12.95

Total: $ 69.85

We received the returned the tools 9 days after you received them:

HCP10299 Socket 9 days x $ 1.25 per day = $ 11.25 rental fee
HCP22025 Socket 9 days x $ 0.75 per day = $ 6.75 rental fee
HCP10300 Socket 9 days x $ 0.25 per day = $ 2.25 rental fee

Total rental fees: $ 20.25

You will be credited/refunded:

$ 69.85 initial price minus $ 20.25 rental fee =
$ 49.60 credited or refunded

HCP28194 Aftermarket carb body THREAD CHASER BASIC TAPS SET. This basic set of 6 taps contains all of the different sizes for the most commonly needed threaded holes on all Hitachi and Mikuni carb bodies. Almost all threaded will exhibit some type of thread wear (distortion) or minor injury that should be repaired, especially to the smaller, more “fragile” threads on the mixture screw bores, the fuel and are jets threads, the bowl, hat, and bracket mounting holes, etc. Running thread taps thru all of these threaded holes in the carb bodies will not only make the re-assembly process easier, smoother, and more secure, but there is a certain satisfaction and surety that comes with having like-new threads that can only be described as “machinist porn” (those of you that know, will know what I mean!). Correct size taps will do the upper and lower rack bracket holes, the float bowl attachment holes, the float bowl drain screw holes, the carb hat attachment holes, synch screws and idle speed bolt holes, the Mikuni float valve seat bracket hole, Mikuni main jet needle retainer plate holes (inside the vacuum piston), all air jet and fuel jet holes, enrichment plunger lifter bracket holes, and throttle shaft butterfly valve mounting holes. Comes with a can of cutting fluid and a t-handle tap holder tool. Note that unlike the complete taps set below (HCP28121), the taps for the Hitachi float valve seat and the choke plunger seat bores (on all Hitachi and Mikuni models) are not included in this set (those larger taps are what add significantly to the cost of the complete taps set). NOTE: due to the reality that you may use these tools only once, it is suggested that you use the tool rental option for this tap set. However, under the rental option, if you use the taps for actual thread tapping (cutting brand new threads in a newly drilled hole), then the return option is not allowed!

Engine, Clutch, Transmission, and Drivetrain System Tools:

HCP28415 Aftermarket engine OIL PRESSURE MEASURING KIT contains everything you’ll need to take periodic measurements of the engine oil pressure………something that Yamaha never provided a means to do, for some unknown reason(s). Periodically measuring the oil pressure in the your engine can provide clues as to the health of various engine components (not just the oil pump condition, but more importantly, bearing clearances….as excessive bearing clearances will “leak” pressurized oil and reduce oil pressure, thus leading to all sorts of problems). Thus keep track of oil pressures over time is an important “maintenance” procedure, akin to checking cylinder compression pressure periodically.

This kit contain a specially made main oil gallery plug and a liquid-filled mini oil pressure gauge. The gallery plug replaces either the left or right side factory gallery plug ----- the one with a 10mm allen-key drive directly below the round crankshaft engine covers (actually called “oil pump covers" by Yamaha, for some odd reason……). Once installed, you can run the engine and check pressure (we recommend checking pressures both cold and hot, and recording the readings). Although you can leave the gauge installed permanently, we do not recommend this, as it does stick out past the pump cover and you risk damage of epic proportions if anything were to disturb it…….

Comes with block-off plug, so that the gauge can be removed while leaving the gallery plug in place; the block-off plug replaces the gauge and creates a leak-proof solution, and leaves the gallery plug in place, ready to re-use (re-installation of the gauge) whenever is necessary.

Fits all XJ650 - XJ900 engines. And although Yamaha does not specify oil pressures for their engines, they do note that the oil pump relief valve is set to open at 64-78 psi, so you can use that as a guide. Each:

This type tool will damage the threads as part of the removal process, and although it’s possible to use them on broken threads (the smooth shank portion of the stud, even if that is all that is present i.e. the stud or bolt has snapped off and all that remains is the unthreaded portion), they don’t always work all that well on smooth surfaces…..but this also means that the can also be used on dowel pins and some guide collars. Note that these stud removers are much larger is physical size that the HCP26979 tools, which may present problems in restricted areas: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE5VnScjRcI This set has the proper sized tools to remove exhaust manifold studs, broken intake manifold bolts, cylinder head and cylinder jug studs, the long cylinder head-to-crankcase studs (all models except XJ700-X and XJ750-X engines), and most other threaded studs (or headless bolts) on the engine and drivetrain. HCP10181 Aftermarket VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL SET, comes with 5 different size adapters to allow use on all XJ-series engines, including the Maxim-X type multi-valve engines. NOTE: although this screw-type compressor tool comes with five different-sized retainer disc "adapters", you may find that none of the specific adapter sizes fits your valve spring retainers "perfectly". However, you merely need to select the size adapter that most closely fits the retainer size on your engine (never bigger, always smaller than the O.D. of the retainer disc) and use that adapter carefully (so it does not "slip" or "walk off" the edge of the retainer disc as you are applying pressure, as you DO NOT under any circumstances want it to "walk-over" the edge of the retainer and then scar the lifter bucket bore!).

Although the OEM sized adapters fit the retainer discs "perfectly" (and therefore do not pose this "walking and potential scarring of the lifter bucket bore" threat), the huge difference in price between the OEM tools listed above and this complete, high-quality compressor tool set makes it worthy of purchasing, as long as you are careful in its use. Our experience shows that the 30mm adapter will fit the retainer discs very well (or exactly on some models) on the 550-1100 engines (except the 700-X and 750-X water-cooled models). The "X" motors will use the 19mm adapter; but it will not fit the retainer perfectly, but is the closest practical size. Comes in a handy plastic storage case.

HCP27430 Aftermarket engine DOWEL PIN PULLER tool kit………what a great little tool to have on hand. Those dowel pins or collars are everywhere on these engines: cylinder heard-to-jugs, jugs-to-upper crankcase, side covers-to-crankcase, crankcase lower-to-upper section, and I’m probably forgetting a few. After time and moisture do their trick, those pins can get stuck….really stuck. And though vise grips (and penetrating oil, and heat, and a bigger hammer…) might work on some of them, these tools make for a quick, easy, and safe extraction. Special split collects fit snugly down over the protruding section of the pin, and with the torque bar or a slide hammer attachment tool, you’ll easily twist or yank them right out! Includes 5 different size collects, which are the correct size to attack almost every pin or collar on these engines. Each;
