STEERING/SUSPENSION:

--Rear Suspension: Shock Absorbers, hardware, etc.

SHOCK ABSORBERS:

Well, let's face it, it's been 25-30 years since your bike was first sold and operated, and your rear SHOCK ABSORBERS:

a) were not all that great to begin with, and....
b) pretty much completely worn out by now.

Factory-installed motorcycle shock absorbers cannot always be considered top-of-the-line from either performance, comfort, or endurance standpoints----and of course, this is a typical situation for most mass-production vehicles, as they end up being a "compromise" product that will (hopefully) suit "all buyers, in all conditions" and are usually selected for production bikes with an eye towards cost efficiency and savings (the exception being the original XJ900RK Seca rear shocks, which ARE a true high-performance design).

Stock fluid- or gas-filled, spring-assisted shock absorbers are good for about 10,000 to 20,000 miles of typical use before they are ready for that large XJ graveyard in the sky.

Of course, if you want to go thru the effort, stock shocks can be dis-assembled and rebuilt, here's how:

OEM Shock Absorbers:

HCP25860 OEM rear SHOCK ABSORBER, brand new unit exactly replaces the original. This mono-shock unit includes the upper bushing, both lower bushings, the lower oil seals, black coil spring, and the rubber mud guard. Lower mounting collars and both upper and lower mounting hardware (bolt, washer, nut) are not included. NOTE: this shock has the same valving (and thus performance and road feel) as the original shock, and will leave the rear suspension at the original height. For all 1992-98 XJ600 Seca II models. Each:
$ 689.95

HCP25847 Aftermarket standard-performance rear SHOCK ABSORBER, brand new unit will properly replace the original. This mono-shock unit includes the upper bushing, both lower bushings, and the lower oil seals. The lower rubber mud guard, the lower mounting collars, and both upper and lower mounting hardware (bolt, washer, nut) are not included. NOTE: this shock has slightly stiffer valving and spring rate compared to the original shock (and thus offers slightly more performance and control than the original), and will leave the rear suspension at the original height. For all 1992-98 XJ600 Seca II models. Each:
$ 489.95

HCP25848 Aftermarket standard-performance rear SHOCK ABSORBER, brand new unit will properly replace the original. This mono-shock unit includes the upper bushing, both lower bushings, the lower oil seals, and the black coil spring. The lower rubber mud guard, the lower mounting collars, and both upper and lower mounting hardware (bolt, washer, nut) are not included. NOTE: this shock has slightly stiffer valving and spring rate compared to the original shock (and thus offers slightly more performance and control than the original), and has a slightly longer length than original and thus will raise the rear suspension by about 5/8” higher than stock. For all 1992-98 XJ600 Seca II models. Each:
$ 499.95

HCP25857 Aftermarket high-performance rear SHOCK ABSORBER, brand new unit will properly replace the original. This mono-shock unit includes the upper bushing, both lower bushings, the lower oil seals, and a red coil spring. The lower rubber mud guard, the lower mounting collars, and both upper and lower mounting hardware (bolt, washer, nut) are not included. NOTE: this shock has much stiffer valving and spring rate compared to the original shock (and thus offers a much firmer feel / performance and control than the original), has a slightly longer length, and will allow for more suspension travel than than original. It will raise the rear suspension by about 3/4” to 1" higher than stock. This shock has enough carrying capacity and can be adjusted for both single and 2-up riding (or extra gear) and still maintain its performance. Single riders should initially try setting #3, while 2-up riders may prefer the #6 or #7 setting (your stock adjuster tool can be used, and it’s recommended that you set it to the lowest preload setting before installation to make fitment easier). Adequate ground clearance for the rear tire when on the centerstand is maintained. Due to the aggressiveness of this shock’s performance over stock, it is recommended that you upgrade your front fork springs to our HCP19477 progressive coil springs or increase the viscosity of your fork fluid (to 15W or 20W) to get a balanced front/rear suspension tune when using these shocks. Fits all 1992-98 XJ600 Seca II models. Each:
$ 449.95

HCP5692 OEM rear SHOCK ABSORBER, brand new replacement unit exactly replaces the original. Although this shock comes with the lower bushing that is correct for the right side, it can also be used on the left side if the original left lower shock bushing is re-used from your original. Complete, assembled shocks come with the springs and top cap. For all XJ750 Seca models. Each:
$ discontinued

Aftermarket Shock Absorbers:

Okay, shocks are pretty simple devices----as are coil springs----and although a coil spring wrapped around a shock absorber is still called a "shock absorber" (go figure!), we all realize that although each component "does its own thing", they each work with and complement each other in determining not just the ride quality, but also the performance (handling, braking, and acceleration) characteristics of the bike.

If it's time for a newly shocking experience, then lucky for you, because shock absorber technology and performance has improved dramatically since these bikes were built.

SPRINGS: actually come in two basic styles, Linear Resistance and Progressive Resistance. Resistance is merely the ability of the spring to "resist" compression given a load acting on it.

A spring with linear resistance characteristics will deflect equally in proportion to the load on it: for example, put a hypothetical linear spring under a 100-pound load, and it will compress by 1" in overall length. Put 200-pounds of weight on it, and it compresses a total of 2 inches; 300-pounds, 3" of compression, etc. That's a linear spring, a 1-to-1 straight-line relationship between load (weight) and compression.

No factory springs are linear though......

Because although a linear spring has very predictable deflection characteristics, they ride and handle terribly. All factory XJ springs are what are known as "progressive springs", meaning that it takes additional loading for each incremental inch of compression. So for example, a progressively-wound spring may still deflect 1" under the first 100-pounds of weight, but a 200-pound load will only deflect it a total of 1-3/4", while a 300-pound load may only result in a 2-3/8" compression. Equal additional amounts of weight (load) result in less and less compression......in other words, the spring gets PROGRESSIVELY harder to compress as the load increases.

This increased resistance as the load increases results in a much more usable amount of control as applied to a shock absorber, as well as a much better ride quality. The springs (and combined spring/shock) can be really "soft" for absorbing small dips and bumps, and then get progressively stiffer as the load increases, as happens during spirited cornering, braking, or acceleration. In addition, as long as the progression of the spring resistance is increased in a continual manner---with no great leaps or surges in resistance rates throughout the entire range of spring travel---then it makes for a very predictable response, which is incredibly important for driver safety and confidence.

Visually, you can look at a spring and tell whether it's a linear or progressive spring by observing the distance between adjacent coil windings: linear springs have equal spacing between all coils, top to bottom, while progressive-resistance springs having a different spacing between adjacent coils as you observe the entire spring. And, the tighter the spacing between the coils, the more the resistance....which is why the coils become much closer together as you approach the ends of a progressively-wound spring.

SHOCK ABSORBERS: although many people think of a shock absorber as just "another kind of spring"----and although there is some truth to that thought----shock absorbers not only provide a supplementary spring-like quality, but they also perform the unique function of providing an "anti-spring" or "counter-spring" function that helps, once again, to provide a level of control to the suspension that is so important.

What happens when a spring is compressed? It gains tension, stores the energy, and it resists the load and actually "fights against the load"---it wants to "snap back" to its original (or even past its original) at-rest position. This is NOT an endearing trait of a coil spring when used in a suspension....it makes the suspension into somewhat of a pogo-stick, boing-boing-boing until it finally comes to rest (and since a suspension, when in use while riding on anything except a perfectly flat, smooth surface, with absolutely zero braking or acceleration occurring, is ALWAYS involved in some type of action).

Shock absorbers to the rescue! By its design, a shock absorber, via a variety of engineering design details, not only resists the compression force (as a spring does), but the shock absorber then "fights back" against the tendency of a coiled, tensed spring to want to snap instantly back into the at-rest spring position. By forcing fluid and sometimes gas through a series of valves and orifices, the shock absorber SLOWS DOWN this "instant rebound" tendency of the spring, again adding the measure of control and predictability that enhances ride quality, performance, and safety.

TOGETHER, IN PERFECT HARMONY: what "shock absorber" engineers strive for is the balance between these two competing forces and components, in order to provide the best of all worlds. By studying, testing, and tweaking the variables of spring size, progressive spring rates, shock barrel size, types of fluid and valving within the shock, etc., they seek to provide the best overall combination. And as with anything in life, there are compromises, and there are expenses involved when trying to increase the overall performance level of a "shock". A well-designed and performing shock is the result of all these types of efforts and expenses, and is as much of an art as it is science.

Two common features that can be used to increase the performance of a shock----and, which determines how much you can "custom-tune" the performance of a given shock to your individual bike, riding style, and personal preferences and characteristics----is via the use of spring "pre-load" adjusters and shock "rebound dampening" adjusters.

Springs can benefit by having their "load" pre-tensioned, rather than being set at a fully at-rest position. The spring pre-load adjuster, at the bottom of the shock tube, allows the user (via a special shock "spanner wrench") to increase or decrease the amount of pre-loaded tension on the spring. ALL original and aftermarket shocks have these pre-load adjusters, although "high performance" shocks normally have more pre-load positions available than less expensive versions.

Shocks can be enhanced through the addition of a variable, user-adjustable "rebound damper control" mechanism---usually in the form of a small thumbwheel adjuster that clicks into looser or stiffer rebound-resistance positions. Remember, this adjuster on the shock body controls how strongly the internal shock valving "fights back" against a compressed, tensioned spring's attempt to jump back as quickly as possible to its relaxed state.

Rebound dampening controls are normally only found on higher-performance (and thus more expensive) shock absorbers. For example, all XJ550, all XJ650 (except Turbo), and all XJ700 models did NOT have rebound adjusters on the factory shocks, while all other models did have a user-controllable rebound adjustment mechanism.

Of course, the more user controllability, the better, but at a price....and not just in the initial purchase price. "Dialing in" a high-performance shock, through trial-and-testing of all the different combinations of spring pre-loads and shock rebound rates, can be a time consuming (but very important and vast-improvement-when-done) type of task. For example, while the 12-Series, 14-Series, and 412-Series of Progressive Suspension shocks all feature a 4-position spring tension pre-load adjuster, they have NO shock rebound dampening adjustment available, at all.

But the 418-Series of Progressive Suspension shocks have both a 4-position spring pre-load adjuster AND a 5-position shock rebound adjuster....giving a total of (5 x 4 = ) 20 different combinations of spring pre-load and shock rebound characteristics. Sorting through all of them is going to take a full afternoon, adjusting one, then the other, and going out on a repeatable "test-track" type of ride to see how the bike performs under all sorts of different conditions at each setting(s) combination, and which one you like the most.

But like we said, when you get it "right", you'll know it, you'll feel it, and you'll probably realize that it was well worth your efforts!

WARNING: although there are a number of extremely low-dollar "generic" shock absorbers that are available at large retailers, we caution you that such shock absorbers are not specifically valved, nor are their springs designed for the characteristics of XJ-series bikes (or, really, for ANY bikes). They are inexpensive because they are generic, and although that keeps their cost down, it also tends to keep their performance and durability way down, too.

All shock absorbers (except for the 12-Series and 14-Series shocks) are sold as fully assembled pairs, and come with all mounting adapters and bushings, as well as illustrated mounting instructions. You will be pleasantly, and perhaps amazingly surprised, just how much of a difference a set of true performance shock absorbers will make in the ride and handling quality of your bike.

NOTE: Progressive recommends the use of their HEAVY DUTY shock absorbers for single riders who weigh more than 200 pounds, or if most of your riding is done with a passenger or with heavy loads (such as in saddlebags, etc.).

TIP: Rear suspension SAG is an important and almost-always overlooked factor in determining ride quality and rear suspension performance (handling and ride quality). Incorrectly set sag not only effects the performance of the shock, but also of your front forks because as the ride height in the rear changes, the amount and rate of how the weight of the bike is transferred to the front forks changes, too. Sag can (and should be) adjusted whenever you install new shocks on your bike, or, if it’s never been checked and adjusted before, now would be a good time to do it!

Progressive Suspension Shock Absorbers:

Progressive Suspension has been making motorcycle shock absorbers for over 20 years and is acknowledged as one of the leaders in the industry. We are now offering their line of replacement shock absorbers that not only perform exceptionally well----and are designed specifically for these model bikes----but also come in a variety of performance levels to fit almost any budget.

14-Series: are the most economical shock in the Progressive Suspension line, and feature small-body "vintage" style shock bodies as used originally on all XJ550 and XJ650 (except Turbo) models. Shock bodies are black, and then you have a choice of either black or chrome springs (in standard or heavy-duty versions) . These classic 14-Series shocks feature a 4-position spring pre-load cam-adjuster, velocity-sensitive multi-stage valving, and come with a full assortment of installation bushings, a packet of adjuster grease, the cam adjuster tool, and complete installation instructions. These shocks provide an affordable alternative to replace your original worn-out shocks with while getting the great quality of the Progressive brand!

As with the 12-Series shocks below, these 14-Series shock absorbers are just the shock body, so you'll also need to order (and install) the appropriate coil springs to be used with the bodies. Installation is fairly simple, and involves sliding the spring over an extended shock body and then compressing the spring (using your body weight) until the retainer clip can be installed. The heavy-duty springs may require some extra weight to compress enough to install the retainer, or you can use the tried-and-true "tourniquet" technique using some strong clothesline and a straight bar of some type and using the bar to twist the clothesline, thus compressing the spring.

NOTE: Customer experience and use seems to indicate that use of the 14-Series standard-duty springs on all XJ550 models and the heavy-duty springs on the all XJ650 models seems to provide the best level of performance and handling.

Shown below are the 12-Series shocks, which are basically identical in appearance to these 14-Series shocks:

12-Series: are the 2nd most popular shock in the Progressive Suspension line, and feature BLACK steel shock bodies, your choice of either black or chrome springs (in standard or heavy-duty versions), plastic upper spring cover caps, a 5-position spring pre-load cam-adjuster, and a full assortment of installation bushings, a packet of adjuster grease, the cam adjuster tool, and complete installation instructions. NOTE: these 12-Series shocks feature the same high-quality damper system as used in the more expensive 412-series shocks listed below.

Unlike the 412-Series and 418-Series shocks, these 12-Series shock absorbers are just the shock body, so you'll also need to order (and install) the appropriate coil springs to be used with the bodies.

NOTE: Customer experience and use seems to indicate that use of the 12-Series standard-duty springs on all XJ550 models and the heavy-duty springs on almost all XJ650 and larger models seems to provide the best level of performance and handling.

The aluminum air chamber, in conjunction with the heavy-duty spring and combined with their velocity-sensitive, multi-stage damper valving insures precise control and the adjustability to suit your specific needs. These shocks come completely assembled, and with all the air lines, fittings, instructions, and installation bushings needed.

HCP9421 Progressive Suspension 416-Series AIR SHOCK ABSORBERS, featuring highly polished covers with black lower accordion boots. 418-Series: these are not just the "big daddy" of the Progressive Suspension line, they are the 800-pound Gorillas of the aftermarket shock absorber world, and feature ALL the goodies: huge aircraft-grade polished billet aluminum or double-walled CHROME steel shock bodies, gas-charged for fade-free performance, a 5-position adjustable rebound rate damper, a 4-position spring pre-load cam-adjuster, hard-chromed 4130 steel shafts, and a full assortment of installation bushings, a packet of adjuster grease, the cam adjuster tool, and complete installation instructions.

NOTE: Progressive recommends the use of their HEAVY DUTY shock absorbers for single riders who weight more than 200 pounds, or if most of your riding is done with a passenger or with heavy loads (such as in saddlebags, etc.). However, with these 418-series shocks, their heavy-duty designation is overkill on the smaller XJ550 and XJ650 models, and we do not recommend nor offer them for those applications.
