Your swingarm takes quite a bit of abuse, being down there “in the dirt” all the time, and having to keep the entire rear suspension in line and marching on the straight -and-narrow. The years take their toll: they get off center due to lack of maintenance/adjustment, and the bushings or bearings wear and get a bit sloppy, and then just lose their ability to keep the rear tire in proper alignment. With such a long distance (lever) between the pivot point of the swingarm to the frame and the rear wheel, almost any movement or wiggle is going to result in a bike that is less than rock-solid predictable, and can also leads to front-end steering shimmy or high-speed shake…..something that you really want to avoid!

We make attending to the needs of this part easy with both complete rebuilt swingarms or a full complement of rebuild components to properly help you “set your swingarm straight”! NOTE: the replacement of swingarm bushings (XJ550 models) or the swingarm bearings (all shaft-drive models) require proper-sized drifts to remove and install the new components, and in the case of shaft-drive swingarms, a 3-jaw bearing/bushing puller will most likely be required to remove the old races. Do not install new bearings into original races (shaft-drive models), they will wear out quickly!

SWINGARM REBUILD PARTS:

sa2) Over the years, the swingarm bearings and pivot shaft parts take a beating....when was the last time you (or anyone you know) ever lubricated them or even checked them for wear and play? Well, wear they do, and then they start moving around under load and cornering, leading to vibrations, wandering during straight-line riding, and other unnecessary, unneeded, unwanted, and undesirable (not to mention unsafe) characteristics and conditions. Wow, that a lot of "un's". Oh well.

In fact, if your bike rides "rock hard stiff" in the rear end, what you may find is not only worn-out rear shock absorbers, but easily overlooked is worn or even partially seized swingarm pivots and bearings. Since swingarm lubrication and maintenance is probably THE most overlooked aspect of preventative maintenance (do you know anyone who has ever done it?), it's a good bet that you swingarm could be silently suffering the same fate, too.....

The factory service interval for the repacking of the swingarm pivot bearings is every 10,000 miles (XJ550, XJ650, 1981-83 XJ750, and XJ1100 models) or every 16,000 miles (XJ700, XJ750-X, XJ750RL, and XJ900 models)

Not to worry! We've got all the major and minor parts that you'll need to refresh, restore, rejuvenate, renew, and other properly rebuild your oft-neglected swingarm system.

NOTE: the replacement of swingarm bushings (XJ550 models) or the swingarm bearings (all shaft-drive models) require proper-sized drifts to remove and install the new components, and in the case of shaft-drive swingarms, a 2- or 3-jaw bearing/bushing puller will most likely be required to remove the old races. XJ550 models:

XJ550 models use a long PIVOT SHAFT BOLT, that runs through a central PIVOT TUBE, which is support by a pair of BUSHING - BEARINGS, each of which are retained by use of a THRUST SHIM and thrust shim COVER PLATE. The whole shooting match is held together by a NUT that threads onto the right side of the pivot bolt.

XJ550 owners can upgrade their rear swingarm plastic bushings with replacement high-performance bronze bushings or needle roller bearings for a silky smooth, much more stable response.

To be effective, it should be used with either the current OEM version of the HCP2234 pivot tube (original pivot tubes did not have grease passage holes in them) or the HCP11507 pivot tube. Unlike the XJ550 models, XJ650 through XJ1100 (and XS1100) models use dual short PIVOT SHAFTS, associated LOCK WASHERS and NUTS, a spacer COLLAR, an OIL SEAL, and a BEARING on each side of the swingarm. A round black or shiny chrome end cap or COVER hides the inner workings from public view. Here are the pieces you'll need, working your way from the outside inwards:

Sometimes, the toughest part of working on a vehicle is battling the effects of time: seized fasteners, caused by rust, corrosion, and other factors, turns what should be a 5-minute effort into a 50-minute (or more) chore, complete with rounded-off, ruined, or snapped fasteners, e-z outs, heli-coil inserts, and more.........and that's just not right.

Anti-Seize Paste:

xx1) Fastener ANTI-SEIZE PASTE. Yeah, it's smelly and makes a slippery mess on your fingers, but this stuff is a life-saver for any true wrencher, because it prevents problems down the road. Use it on any metal fastener that does not require a "loctite" thread-locker material to be used. This means on just about every fastener that is carb, engine case, or suspension-related! (except for carb upper and lower rack-mount screws and butterfly valve screws, which do require the use of a thread-lock fluid). If you think that it might, sometime, in the future, need to come off: use anti-seize compound! NOTE: the "base" metal material used in the different anti-seize pastes below do not determine what type of fastener to use such pastes on; it merely signifies what base material is used to create the anti-seize paste. You can use any "base-metal" anti-seize paste on any type of fastener and metal.

NOTE: the use of anti-seize compounds will result in a TORQUE-MULTIPLYING EFFECT……..the result of a reduction in friction between the threaded contact points……and thus fasteners treated with anti-seize compound should have their torque values reduced by at least 10-15% when installed into steel material, and up to 25% into aluminum materials or other “soft” metals” (such as spark plugs into cylinder heads, or almost any other type of fastener into the engine) …… note that this rule applies only to service manual torque specifications on fasteners that are not indicated to be treated with anti-seize fluid by the factory …. if the factory manual specifies the use of an anti-seize coating, then the specified torque value for that fitting already takes into account the “reduced torque” necessary.

xx2) The next most important tool: fastener THREAD LOCKER FLUIDS. Use on any fastener that you don't normally ever remove, to make sure that it stays that way. Comes in a variety of formulas, each one designed for a specific use as explained below. NOTE: the damper rod retaining bolt (in the very bottom of the fork tube lower leg, screwing up into the bottom of the damper rod) requires the use of the HCP1267 / HCP27756 medium-strength or the HCP1268 high-strength thread-locking fluid. Yamaha recommend the high-strength fluid, but we’ve found that the medium-strength fluid works as well and makes future dis-assembly a bit easier.

HCP1266 Low Strength THREAD LOCKER FLUID, 6ml squeeze tube. This is a semi-permanent formula that provides moderate vibration-loosening resistance, while still allowing for easy disassembly of the fastener with hand tools.
