PISTONS, PISTON RINGS, AND RELATED:

OEM and aftermarket cast pistons and matching piston ring sets restore that long-lost compression and performance.

NOTES:

- Pistons and piston rings are not ordered until AFTER engine teardown and cylinder wall diameter, taper, and other critical measurements and conditions are inspected, and the determination is made concerning what the final cylinder size is needed (standard bore, 1st oversize, etc.).

Only then does the purchase of the appropriate sized pistons and/or ring sets commence. Pistons are then measured for their actual size (as opposed to their "supposed-to-be" advertised size), and only then does engine boring occur, to allow for and result in the proper piston-to-cylinder clearances. Piston rings are then fitted and sized to the actual finished cylinder dimensions before installation.

ANY MACHINIST OR SHOP THAT DESCRIBES TO YOU A PROCESS OTHER THAN THE ABOVE, PLEASE TAKE YOUR ENGINE AND BUSINESS ELSEWHERE, as they are planning on "cutting corners" on your engine rebuild and such actions will cost you dearly in the performance and longevity of your rebuilt engine.


Which Way is Up?:

- All original and aftermarket piston rings are "directional"....the top and second ring are designed to be installed in a certain orientation. Check your service manual for the proper installation procedures. Most factory oversize rings have their oversize dimension stamped into the top ("up") surface of the ring; standard sized rings typically do not have any such dimension markings, but typically will be stamped or otherwise marked with letters, or numbers, or both on the “top-facing” surface.


Identification of top vs. 2nd (center) rings:

On most original rings, the top ring has either a "rounded" or a “square” outer edge, while the 2nd (center) ring has a “beveled” or “slant cut” to their outer face.

- The 2nd (center) ring is always installed with their wider, "scraper" edge towards the bottom of the piston:

- Some current OEM rings (and almost all of the aftermarket rings) have top and 2nd rings that both have “square” outer edges, and can only be differentiated by looking at the outer surface of the ring (the side that actually contacts the cylinder wall). On the top ring, the outer edge will be bright or chrome-plated. The second (center) ring is not bright or plated, and appears black.



Ring end gaps:

- All original and aftermarket piston rings must be sized to the finished bore dimensions by filing the end gap to achieve proper specified clearance (end gap). Failure to do so can result in seized rings. Most air-cooled engines run "choked" cylinders.....the cylinder bore is smaller at the bottom of the bore and larger on top (after the cylinder reaches operating temps, the bore stabilizes). This "choke" is also known as bore taper and is critical.

When measuring your cylinder, take your readings with a t-gauge or cylinder bore dial indicator at the BOTTOM of the choke. This will give you your tightest ring gap reading. Once you determine which rings to buy, you'll need to hand-check each one by pushing it to the bottom of the choke to measure your ring gap. If it's too tight, you'll need to file the ends of the gap to open up the clearance. This can be done hand with a small flat file, but it's a much wiser idea to buy a ring gap filer------it does a much neater and far more accurate job. It is also recommended that a proper size Flex Hone be run down the bore PRIOR to fitting the rings......the cross-hatch finish that the flex hone creates will give new rings a nice bore pattern with which to seat.

If you want to de-carbon your piston crowns, valves, or combustion chambers, then a 50/50 mix of automatic tranny fluid and acetone (careful, extremely flammable!) left overnight on the carboned areas will help to soften and loosen the carbon, allowing easier removal with a brass brush.

HCP23162 Aftermarket piston ring COMPRESSOR TOOL SET. Special spring-steel compressor “clamps” prevent ring damage during cylinder installation, and are easily removed after the cylinder jugs are in position. Supplied with clamp ring compressor tool and 4 clamping rings (one each of 4 different sizes) which will allow use on all XJ- and XS-series engine sizes. Comes with a storage case. Cylinder Hones:

These medium-grit, flexible CYLINDER HONES are just what’s needed to apply a proper “clean-up” cross-hatch finish to a set of cylinders before installation of original or new rings. Hundreds of balls of round coarse-grit oxide are attached to flexible twisted-wire shafts, which when chucked into a 3/8” or 1/2” chuck standard drill (or drill press) can be used to break the cylinder wall glaze and eliminate any high spots on the cylinder wall, creating a fresh surface finish that allows rings to seat properly, insuring the highest compression and lowest oil migration. These hones will not remove metal (and are not designed to do so, nor will they typically remove the top-of-cylinder carbon build-up “ridge”). Proper use requires the application of honing oil and precise control of hone rotation and linear (in-and-out) speed of motion. Just a few passes is all that’s needed , and it’s remarkably easy to use ---- its self-centering action allows you to produce a beautiful and professional cylinder wall finish even for a first-time user!

The use of these hones will greatly increase the success of your engine rebuild, and should be considered a “must-have” tool if your are not having your cylinders actually bored and/or refinished by a machine shop.
