OIL COOLERS:

All of the following parts are for the ORIGINAL YAMAHA OIL COOLERS only, and will not fit on any aftermarket style oil coolers.

Generally, the factory oils coolers as used on XJ650 Turbo, XJ650, XJ750, and various XJ900 models are very reliable and trouble-free. However, the o-rings and dowel pins should be replaced whenever the cooler lines are disturbed or show evidence of leaking.


Complete Oil Cooler Retrofit Kits:

Sometimes it’s really tough to keep your cool..........especially if you’re an air-cooled engine stuck in traffic in the middle of a global-warming summer. Not to worry, we’ve got what’s needed for you to keep your cool and still look good while doing so.

Unknown to many owners, Yamaha actually equipped most of their rest-of-the-world XJ models --- in Euroland, in the Land Down Under, in the Land of the Rising Sun, etc. ---- with oil coolers from the factory. It was only here in North American that the XJ550, XJ650 Maxim and *XJ650RJ Seca, and the XJ750 models were left to fend for themselves. Combined with the penchant for Yamaha to “lean tune” their engines to meet EPA emissions requirements, this is an unfortunate circumstance, and keeping your engine oil cool is THE best way to insure internal engine longevity.

Why did this happen? It certainly isn’t due to geographic considerations……..London, England and Paris, France are certainly not hotter locales than, let’s say, Yuma Arizona or anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line…….no, it was most probably a cost-savings measure in that era of cost-conscious buyers. The only North American models that got the oil coolers were the XJ650 Turbo (or otherwise the engine would have dropped dead after 10,000 miles or so) and the one-year-only XJ900 “flagship” models (*actually, late-year XJ650RJC Seca Canadian models….the ones painted red…..also came with factory oil coolers, but most probably they were already-completed bikes destined for the European market that were hastily “converted” to a North American model to meet an unexpected demand for these bikes --- or to dump them ---- in the Canadian marketplace).

We’ve now assembled correct, true “bolt-in” FACTORY OIL COOLER KITS that allow you to upgrade your engine to the same standards that the rest of the world has enjoyed for 30+ years. Luckily for us, all XJ650 and all XJ750 air-cooled model frames already have the oil radiator mounting holes tapped in the front frame cross-bar, and the XJ650RJ Seca and all XJ750 air-cooled models have the small “split-ring” bracket under the steering pipe where the top of the oil radiator is secured………..so there’s no cutting, welding, drilling, or fabricating necessary to install these kits. And since they’re put together from a combination of original and refurbished OEM parts, they’ll fit first time, every time……….so you can get your kool on with just a few hours work.

The XJ650 Maxim models will require the installation of an upper cooler retaining "loop bracket", which is included with those kits.

All systems will fit bikes with stock or aftermarket exhaust, with or without fairings, and require simple tools to install.

You might want to also consider upgrading to one of our SPIN-ON OIL FILTER CONVERSION KITS, as now would be the most efficient time to do so, and would truly bring your bike into the modern age, oil-system wise! All kits come with all necessary parts for installation, including new o-rings, mounting hardware, and a mounting diagram.

You must check and verify that your frame has these two smaller (m6) holes in the frame cross-tube in order to use this kit! NOTE: as with the factory system, you will need to retain and re-use your original oil filter cover and mounting bolt/bypass valve, as these items are not included with this kit. NOTE: most XJ650 Maxim models did not come with the welded-on loop bracket to the front frame gusset which the upper stud of the oil cooler radiator mounts into. This this loop bracket is necessary to properly mount the factory cooler (to keep it from vibrating unnecessarily). This kit contain a reproduction loop bracket that can be spot-welded or screwed into the front frame gusset, along with an alignment/placement template. This bracket must be installed for a secure radiator mounting! All XJ650RJ Seca and XJ650 Euro models came from the factory with this loop bracket already installed (even if the bike did not have the factory oil cooler). Oil Cooler System Adapter Housing:

HCP3140 OEM oil cooler mounting ADAPTER HOUSING, this is the large cast aluminum finned plate that fits against the crankcase and accepts the lower ends of the oil cooler hoses. For all 1984-85 FJ600, 1986-88 FZ600, 1989-90 XJ600, XJ650, XJ750, and all XJ900RK and RL models with a factory-installed oil cooler. Necessary when adding a factory oil cooler to a non-factory cooler model. This is NOT the finned outer oil filter "cover" that the oil filter element lives within (that filter housing cover is the same on factory oil cooler and non-oil cooler models). This housing does not include but requires the installation of the HCP3141 bypass valve PLUNGER, the HCP3142 bypass valve SPRING, the HCP3143 bypass valve CAP WASHER, and the HCP3144 CIRCLIP in order to be a "complete" adapter plate. This adapter housing is still necessary even when installing our aftermarket HCP1284xx series spin-on can oil filter conversion kits on a factory oil-cooler equipped bike. It is NOT needed when installing the spin-on can filter conversion kits on a NON-cooler bike.

Oil Cooler System Adapter Housing Union Bolt:

We now have available the large hex-headed Oil Cooler Adapter Housing UNION BOLT. This is the bolt that has both external threads (where the bolt threads into the engine block) and the internal threads (where the oil filter housing cover/bypass valve bolt threads into). This "union" bolt is what actually holds the oil cooler adapter housing to the block. Many of the used factory oil coolers that are found for sale have all the component pieces needed to install a factory cooler onto a non-cooler bike EXCEPT FOR THIS BOLT, and without it, well, it just ain't gonna happen---this is a very specialized design bolt. For all XJ550 models (with or without the oil cooler), all XJ650 Turbo models, and all XJ900RK models, or on any XJ model adapting a factory oil cooler to a non-oil cooler model.

The large, flat, special thickness washer that goes with this bolt is also available and is listed separately, as well as many of the various factory oil cooler repair pieces, including the adapter plate and associated parts.


HCP3165 Aftermarket oil cooler adapter housing-to-block UNION BOLT, cnc-machined high-carbon steel bolt exactly replaces the original in all aspects. For all 1984-85 FJ600, 1986-88 FZ600, 1989-90 XJ600, XJ650, XJ750, and XJ900RK, RK, and N/FN models with a factory-installed oil cooler.
