NOTE: This o-ring does not fit down into the cavity where the tensioner locking bolt goes into the body of the tensioner case; that cavity has a double-chamfer, and the HCP2173 washer (above) on the bolt stops against the locknut-threaded portion. When you tighten the adjuster bolt itself, that washer presses the o-ring against but not completely into the outer chamfer to seal it. Once this o-ring gets dried out and hard, it can be pressed all the way into the cavity and it stops doing its job and a thus a common source of oil leaking develops there.

NOTE: in some situations, you can use the following technique to remove larger oil seals that would otherwise require case-splitting to remove. All large oil seals have a metal inner structure that you can (very carefully!) drill into and then pry out:

NOTE: the crank seals below no longer have the original flanged mounting lip, so they can be installed without splitting the cases, but the removal of the original flanged seals can be a real challenge without splitting the cases.......these are the best videos that we could find to show the process, although the author failed to show the most important part (!)----how to dig the old flanged seal out of the cases.
