HANDLEBAR CONTROL SWITCHES:

css3) OEM and aftermarket handlebar-mounted CONTROL SWITCHES are now available to restore the function of these key components. The left (clutch lever) side switch controls the headlights, turn signals, horn, and mounts the choke lever. The right (brake lever) side switch operates the engine kill switch and operates the starter motor.

HCP455, HCP7375, and HCP14919 Switch Modification Options for use on XJ550, all XJ650 (except Turbo), 1980-82 all XS400, and all 1981-83 XV750 Virago models:

Method A: modify this switch by adding your original control switch harness connector shell onto the end of the wiring harness that comes with this switch. You will cut off the connector from this switch, cut off your existing connector from your original control switch harness (control switch side), and splice the wires together, leaving your original connector on the end of this switch. We recommend the use of our HCP13045 insulated, solder-sleeve butt connectors to join the wires together.

Wire color coding:
- on this switch: Red/white tracer, Brown solid (for the OFF-RUN-OFF switch), and Blue/white tracer, and Black solid.

You will splice the same-color wires together, with the only difference being that your original control switch harness has two of the Red/white tracer wires (this switch has only one), and this control switch harness has only one Red/white tracer wire. The other Red/white tracer wire from your original connector shell will be joined to the Brown solid wire on this switch.

Method B: you will retain the connector on this switch harness as-is, and replace the connector on your main wiring harness. You'll need to cut off the original trapezoidal-shaped, black, 6-place connector shell and replace it with a HCP9334FNWHT connector shell along with four of the HCP9360BR1418 male flat blade terminals. As discussed above in "Method A", note the orientation of wires colors and make sure they line up correctly........and the brown wire on the switch side plug goes to one of the Red/white wires on the main harness side.

Left Side Handlebar Control Switches:

NOTE: If you are having to manually hold the signal lever fully over to the left or right position (in order for the signals to flash), this could be an indication that the internal contacts (within the switch housing) may be wonky. There is a "two-armed" contact that can get bent, or, the slider contacts may have gotten dirty and/or the solder connections to the slider contacts have broken or become loose:

The first link above has a good image of the copper contact "arms" that can get bent, and will thus no longer make contact with the brass "button" contact on the bottom of the pivoting lever arm (one button contact on each side of the lever arm), while the second link has some good images of the slider assembly.

NOTE: the wiring harness that comes with the HCP458 switch above does NOT come with the correct molded plastic harness terminal connectors.

It has the full complement of nine, correctly color-coded wires, but each wire is terminated with an individual male bullet connector....the two original plastic terminal connector "shells" are not included. The switch comes with matching female bullet connectors and their protective plastic sheaths, and it is intended that you cut your original main harness-side terminal connectors off, and then install the crimp-on female bullet terminals instead. We do not recommend doing this!....but, it is a “solution” Leaving your main wiring harness intact is an important issue, in our opinion, and so that will be our recommended optimal solution-----but doing so will take some extra effort on your part! (meaning: about 30 minutes of time, a wire cutter/stripper tool, and a proper open-barrel terminal crimping tool).

You actually have three options:

Method A: cut up your main harness, and use the female bullets supplied with this switch to terminate the wires on your main harness (after you---cringe---cut off your original main harness plastic connector blocks), or........

Method B: you could cut off your original switch plastic connector blocks---leaving some wire length coming off the connectors----and then crimp the female bullets to these lead wires to those terminals, and plug the male bullets into those newly added female bullets. This method re-uses your original (proper) connector shells and attaches them to this switch harness.

Method C: similar to the above method, you could cut off your original plastic connector blocks---leaving some wire length coming off the connector----and then use our HCP13045 insulated, solder-sleeve butt connectors to join the wires together, thus re-using your original (proper) connector shells and attaching them to this switch harness.

HCP11104 Aftermarket handlebar right-side control switch RED POINTER, correct red plastic indicator fits within the OFF-RUN-OFF rotary switch and replaces your faded, broken, or missing original. NOTE: this pointer has two mounting pegs molded into the back side of it (as original), and these pegs fit into matching recesses in the rotary switch knob. However, original pointers have at least two different sizes of these pegs (and thus matching hole sizes in the rotary switch), and thus certain original switches may require a small wipe of glue (clear silicone caulk work well) applied to the recess in order to get a secure fit of the pointer to the rotary switch. HCP24452 OEM left control switch HEADLIGHT HI/LO BEAM SELECTOR KNOB with SCREW. This is the black plastic triangle-shaped “”thumb knob” that attaches to the selector arm (below). This plastic knob is commonly missing or badly faded from exposure. This replacement knob comes with its retaining screw. To an expert this may be noticed, but 99.9% of people will never notice the difference, and it will certainly look much better than faded of erased original lettering!

Additionally, you will also want (or need) to "re-white" the recessed, embossed lettering that occurs on many control switch function buttons....such as the "START" and "HORN" and “TURN” button lettering on some models. This can be best accomplished with our white LACQUER PAINT STICK, which is soft enough to be pressed into the lettering cavities and then the excess is wiped away, leaving a fresh, bright, white lettering image.

Finally, you'll want to re-color the faded plastic function buttons (start, horn, on-off rotary or rocker switches, turn signal and headlight position knobs, etc.). The best way to accomplish this is to use an industrial-grade permanent ink marker pen, as these plastic knobs don't like standard paint products. Note that some buttons, such as START or HORN on some models, will require the use of the HCP20579 white lacquer paint (to re-white the recessed lettering) and then a careful and steady hand application of the permanent-ink marker to re-color the button itself. Do NOT re-color the plastic button first; the lacquer paint stick will "pick-up" this ink as it is being applied, and your white letters will then end up with a black, grey, or red tint to them! (and then you will curse and have to start the entire process over.......).
