GAUGES:

Keeping up with the vital information is the responsibility of your gauges and instruments, and whether your bike uses the classic round analog gauges, or Yamaha's first attempt at "computer monitor" type of instrument clusters, we've got a selection of replacement parts for your devices.

Here is a good review of how to actually get to your bulbs so you can replace them! Although shown on an XJ550 model, the basic process is the same on all clusters:

led1) Well, ain't technology great? They look brighter, are more efficient, and thus use alot less wattage to produce the same amount of light output, and thus these LED DASH GAUGE BULBS save you a bit of horsepower (less alternator output needed), and of course they'll basically outlive you and your bike!

These direct replacement bulbs install just like the original socket base (1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim) or wedge-base bulbs (all other XJ models), and have been evaluated and tested to provide the proper level of illumination without creating a night-time glare condition. NOTE: bulbs listed as being "much brighter than stock" means just that......and something to keep in mind when ordering. Typically, bulbs that are typically "always on" during night-time riding (such as the speedo and tacho faceplate illumination, and the blue high-beam warning indicator light) can be very distracting if you choose the "much brighter than stock" option, so choose wisely --- bigger isn't always better!

NOTE: when used for speedometer and tachometer face illumination, all LED bulbs listed as "slightly brighter than stock incandescent bulbs" will create a small "hot spot" at the top center of the speedo and tach faceplate.

The soft rubber filters are very fragile and generally need to be replaced whenever the light bulb is changed. HCP10235 OEM meter illumination green BULB FILTER, this small green rubber filter fits over the end of the meter bulbs and gives the gauge light and face its greenish tint. Although there are a great variety of bulbs that are available for each bike/light position, you should choose the ones that match your level of illumination needs, and mix-or-match as needed. Pricing for each bulb is listed at the end of this section. And yes, you can use our white LED's even under the colored warning light plastic filters and still end up with the proper warning color (i.e. blue for high beam, yellow for turns, green for neutral, red for oil or warning).

NOTE: when used for speedometer and tachometer face illumination, all LED bulbs listed as "slightly brighter than stock incandescent bulbs" will create a small "visual hot spot" on the speedo and tach faceplate directly above the bulb location.

GAUGES:

Most original gauges are remarkably reliable and accurate, especially considering they are precise mechanical or electrical instruments that are exposed to the weather constantly. Gauge face fading is a common problem, and unfortunately is not an issue that we have a current solution for.

The other common issue with the main gauges (speedometer and tachometer) is noise or erratic performance:

Q: "While I was riding last Saturday, my speedometer started to make a squealing nose and the needle started to bounce at the 55-60 mph mark. What is the procedure for a cable fix, or do I just replace the whole cable? Or what are my other options?"

A: This type of problem could be caused by the speedo drive hub (on the wheel), the cable, or the speedo head unit.

You can try lubricating the drive cable (remove it from the bike, hold or hang it vertically, use brake clearer to blast all the old gunk out, and then re-lubricate it with motor oil). Once the “cable” is off the bike, then the inner drive cable (the actual drive cable) can usually be slipped out of the outer plastic sheath to make cleaning easier.

While the cable is off, you can test the speedo head itself using an drill with a proper size square drive socket (which will be the same size as the speedo cable squared drive end) and operate the speedo in this manner ---- the drill should be set to run in reverse, as the cable rotates CCW as you are looking at the back of the speedo (from the front of the bike looking backwards). Note that it may be difficult to reach the speedo drive input while the gauges and/or the headlight assembly are still on the bike.

Yamaha speedometers take a 2240:60 ratio to work properly. The 2240 = 60 MPH means that the cable spinning at 2240 rpm’s will read 60MPH. So you’ll need a drill capable of that speed.

If the speedo works properly when testing it in the above manner, then the issue resides with either the speedo cable (which, if not regularly cleaned internally and re-lubricated, will fail after several years) or the drive hub at the wheel. If the problem goes away, then you can move on to further testing of the cable itself. If the problem persists, the the internal mechanism needs servicing.

You can perform the same "drill test" as described above, but with the speedo drive cable connected at the speedo head, and disconnected at the wheel hub......and the far end of the speedo cable itself chucked into the drill (at the wheel hub end) and running the test again.

If the problem goes away, then you need to service or replace the speedo drive hub. If the problem continues, then it’s probably the internal gauge mechanism that needs cleaning or lubrication. This can be a tedious task and no guarantee of success. Here’s a useful guide; although shown on an XJ550 speedo head unit, they are all very similar, although the dis-assembly procedure may differ

NOTE: we strongly recommend that you do not remove (nor try to do so) the needle assembly from the gauge unit……it is clocked into a certain position, and removing the needle shaft almost always results in a non-operational gauge upon re-assembly.

Instrument Gauges and Clusters-to-Steering Crown Bracket Mounting Hardware:

The instrument cluster are bolted to the upper steering crown bracket via a variety of BOLTS, DAMPERS, COLLARS, and associated WASHERS and NUTS. These rubber insulators ("dampers") tend to harden and deteriorate after some time, and don't "dampen" the cluster anymore, turning your speedo and tach faces into a blurry, vibrating, and buzzing mess! Anytime you remove your cluster, you should consider replacing the dampers, as well as any rusted, frozen, or incorrect hardware and fasteners that you might come across.

Speedometer Trip Meter Rewind Knob:

The knurled knobs allow you to rewind the trip odometer back to the zero position. On most models, these knobs are removed by GENTLY rotating them in the opposite direction from their normal function. On the 1982 XJ750 Maxim models, there is a tiny screw that retains the knob to its internal stem.
