TURN SIGNALS: The stock Yamaha turn signals on these bikes are a "beauty in the eye of the beholder" kind of thing: either you love 'em or hate 'em. Most people don't object to the size of them....in fact, when it comes to turn signals, you want the cager who's heading towards you---you know, the one who is on the cellphone who's also fiddling with the radio dial and swilling coffee at the same time---to NOTICE you, and a large, bright turn signal is a big advantage here. But they do stick out quite a bit more than most people would prefer, looking like big alien ears of some kind........well, nothing's perfect, is it? We can help restore your flashing bunny ears with a variety of high-quality OEM or aftermarket parts. Complete Turn Signal Assembly: Brand new, OEM and reproduction front or rear TURN SIGNAL ASSEMBLY units are now available. Finished in the correct mirror-polished chrome plating, or the smooth-textured, low gloss black finish, these complete, assembled, pre-wired DOT-approved assemblies bolt up directly in place of your stock unit, using the same hardware and mounting points as the originals. Lead wire colors are different from original, but the wires include the correct male bullet connectors so that they will plug directly into your existing main harness terminals. Most aftermarket turn signals are available in both a two-wire and a three-wire design. Two-wire signals operate only as flashers (turn signals), while the 3-wire design signals operate both as running lights and as flashers (3-wire signals were originally used only on the front of XJ700 and XJ1100 models). If you desire, you can upgrade your standard 2-wire "flashers-only" to the three-wire design and have your turn signals also function as running lights (check with your local laws to determine legality of doing such a modification). All turn signals are complete assembled units, and contain the housing, the wire harness, the lense, lense gasket, and a 23W (turn signal only) or an 8W/23W (on the running light/turn signal light versions) standard incandescent bulb. NOTE: original turn signal bulbs are 27W, and the use of the 23W bulbs that come with all of the replacement turn signals may not allow your stock turn signal flasher to perform properly, or at all. If this situation arises, you will need to replace the supplied 23W bulbs with standard original style 27W bulbs. NOTE: all turn signals below do not include the metal or rubber-coated signal housing mounting shaft (also called a stalk or "stay"). In order to design a "self-canceling" turn signal system, Yamaha chose to use a simple but very different style turn signal Flasher than what is used in almost all other vehicle applications. Of course, the unique design of this flasher unit makes it, let's say, "pricey" to say the least! However, if you want your self-canceling feature to work then you'll have to use this original flasher. NOTE: most aftermarket mechanical or solid-state flashers will not function (at all) in place of the original flasher, and even the ones that do (see below) will disable the use of the self-canceller feature from operating. Also, if you substitute LED bulbs in your turn signals for the standard incandescent bulbs, then the stock flasher (which is mechanical) will not see enough of an electrical load to be able to flash correctly, if at all. In such a situation, the stock flasher is not defective, it is just designed to operate at a much higher voltage draw than LED lights provide, and you will need to replace the stock flasher with an aftermarket solid-state flasher. To diagnose problems with your signal system, you should follow these steps: 1) unplug the self-canceller from the main harness. 2) identify the following wire on the main harness side of the plug: white with green tracer stripe wire and the solid black wire. 3) using a volt/ohm meter set on the ohms x 100 range, probe those two wires and then spin the front wheel. The ohms reading should shuttle back and forth between 0 and infinity 4) if the above is good, now identify the yellow with red tracer stripe wire. Hook one lead of your ohm meter to it, and the other to a good chassis grounding point. Now, with the flasher switch on the handlebars OFF (center position), the meter should read infinity. With the lever moved to either the left or right signal engagement position, the ohm meter should read 0 ohms. If the signals work properly when the self-canceller is disconnected from the system, then you know that the flasher relay, the bulbs, and the handlebar switch circuit (inside the control switch on the handlebars) is okay. If the signals won't operate properly, even with the self-canceller removed from the system, then it may be a problem within your control switch itself, the flasher relay, the signal bulbs, wiring, etc. The movement of the thumb lever fully to one side, AND THEN RELEASING THE LEVER, should: a) allow the lever to return to center, and b) keep the turn signals ON (flashing) in whichever direction you had chosen, until either: i) the self-canceller, if plugged in the system, cancels the flashers, or...... ii) if the self-canceller is un-plugged from the system, then the flasher will not cancel until you push "in" (or "down" depending on which model bike you have) on the lever, while the lever is in the center position. Having to hold the lever fully over to the left or right position is an indication that the internal contacts (within the switch housing) may be wonky.
