TOOL KITS:

gts1) Roadside on-bike TOOL KITS contains an assortment of the "most-necessary" tools needed to service the bike during unplanned on-the-road adventures (everything, that is, except a really big hammer!). Original style kits come in a duplicate black vinyl "fold-over top flap" pouch that looks just the same as the original tool pouches that came with XJ-series bikes of this era, right down to the round yellow snap-closure button. Ear Plugs:

Perhaps the most easiest safety device ever invented. Soft expandable tapered foam plugs fit easily and comfortably into the ear canal and prevent constant high-decibel or noise-level "spikes" from wreaking havoc. Rubber Work Gloves:

NOTE: latex is a natural rubber product, and skin irritation or even allergic reactions can occur with their use (about 10-15% of all people have allergies or develop allergies to natural rubber, such as skin rashes, itching, etc.). Cuts in your skin your increase your risk of allergic reaction. Some people are also sensitive to the powder used in the powdered style gloves, rather than to the latex itself. And some unlucky souls are sensitive or allergic to both. Sensitivity or allergic reactions can be either almost immediate (within 30 minutes of exposure) or delayed (up to 48 hours later).

Many carb or paint solvents and some petroleum oils will degrade latex back into its gooey, sticky original state!

JIS Screwdrivers:

mt1) Almost every screw on these bikes are "JIS" design screws, JIS standing for Japanese Industrial Standards, and both the depth and design on the phillips-head "slot" is different than typical US slots. In a nutshell, JIS screws (which can be easily identified by the small punched single "dot" on the screw head, in-between two of the screw slots) have both deeper and "squarer" slots and thus can hold more torque than their rest-of-the-world counterparts. They also require a JIS screwdriver to take full advantage of, and to prevent rounding out the slots as typical phillips screwdrivers will do. The more "rounded" edges of a standard phillips-drive screwdriver cannot exert as much torque on the screw head (by design, actually) and will "cam-out" of the slots, taking some of the slot material with it.....and then you have what is affectionately known as a !!#&$!?**#! stripped out screw head!

So it might be a good idea to also invest in a set of quality JIS screwdrivers; trust me, they make a difference (and yes, they can be used on standard phillips-drive screws, too).

Torque Wrenches:

HCP22947 Aftermarket standard-depth 30mm SOCKET, 1/2-drive thin-wall style that will work properly with the HCP1284 spin-on oil filter adapter kit that we offer. Because of the very close tolerances between the outside faces of the nut and the adapter plate recess, you'll need a very thin-wall socket to tighten this nut with. Chrome-plated, 12-point, 1-/2" drive. NOTE: this is a standard depth (rather than deep depth) socket, and thus it may not work on some models. Yamaha drilled the threaded depth of the oil passage hole (in the engine case, where the threaded stud in our conversion kit will thread into) different lengths on different engines. Since the stud used with our kits must be fully threaded (i.e. “bottomed”) into this threaded hole to work properly, that in turn will leave exposed, on the filter side of the plate, a different length of threads on which to install the retaining nut….depending entirely upon how deep the threads are that Yamaha drilled into the crankcase. And since this socket is used to tighten the retaining nut onto the protruding threads of the stud that sticks up from the adapter plate, there may be engines that have the passage hole drilled shallow, thus resulting in more exposed stud threads protruding from the adapter plate………enough extra threads (4-5) that will not allow this standard-depth socket to fully fit over (and thus “fully reach” and tighten the retaining nut all the way down as required). Our experience shows that about 80% of engines have their passage hole drilled deeply enough to allow the use of this standard depth socket to fully tighten the retaining nut without bottoming out. For the other 20% of engines ---- you’ll need to use one of the deep-drive sockets listed below. Unfortunately, we have no way of telling whether your particular engine has the deeply threaded hole (and thus allows the use of this socket) or not……it appears to be a random thing. NOTE: 22mm is the minimum depth of the threaded portionhole that is necessary the for the stud to be “short” enough (after it exits the adapter plate) to be able to use the HCP22947 socket to tighten the nut that retains the adapter plate to the engine case. This 22mm measurement is the total length as measured from the flat, machined face of the crankcase (where the large o-ring will fit against) down into the threaded portion of the hole………meaning, you will need to put a straightedge of some type across this machined face, and then measure from it down to the bottom of the threads in the hole (note that the hole is not threaded all the way to its bottom!).

The large flat machined “circle” is where the large sealing o-ring (bottom of page 7) is going to sit; the measurement that you’ll need is from the top of that machined area (hence the need for a straightedge placed across it, so you have a measuring point to go from when measuring down into the threaded hole that the mounting stud will be screwed into).

At the bottom of page 8 is how the adapter plate and stud is going to look after initial installation; the determining factor as to whether the “short” socket will work is how deep the threaded stud is going to be able to be threaded into that hole before it bottoms out…………the middle picture on page 8 is an image from an engine with a “shallow” hole (so the stud protrudes much further out, and thus this shorty socket won’t reach down to the nut), while the bottom picture is from one with a deep hole (and therefore not much of the stud protrudes)…..you can see how much more length of the threaded stud protrudes from the filter plate in the middle picture than in the lower picture……….and how far the stud protrudes determines whether a short socket can fit over the protruding length of the stud (to be able to reach and tighten the hex nut).

c9a) THREAD CHASER DIES. Unlike the thread taps listed above, these thread DIES are used to clean, restore, and repair threads on the threaded fasteners (screws, bolts, studs, etc.). These tools help restore that like-new feel to used bolts, and straighten and restore threads to allow for proper torque settings to be achieved and maintained. Unlike standard round dies, these dies feature cutting teeth within a standard “hex-nut” shape, so you can use a wrench or socket to hold the die and turn it over the fastener. This happens quite a bit on your exhaust manifold studs and also with the intake manifold bolts. As long as you have a bit of the broken stud remaining outside of the cylinder head threaded hole (in other words, the fastener has not broken off "flush"), then a stud extractor tool is what's going to save your day. it32) Aftermarket handheld CENTER PUNCH is useful for making punch points when starting drill bits, etc. These small (5" long, 1/2" diameter knurled body) punches have a hardened alloy steel punch tip, and does not require the use of a striking hammer.

NOTE: the float pin on Mikuni carbs is held in via a friction fit on one end of the pin, and it is not uncommon for these pins to become seized in the posts.........however, one end of the pin is not (from the factory) "mushroomed"................if yours are, it's probably because someone was pounding at it with a punch trying to get it loose, and weren't able to. Any amount of "swollen" or mushrooming of the end of the pin should be gently removed with a file or similar tool, before pin extraction is attempted.

But even in the best of cases, because of the "friction-fit" design of these pins, removing them can be a tricky process. We then recommend you try this trick:
