HANDLEBARS AND HARDWARE:

hb22) OEM original style HANDLEBARS bring back the original shine and appearance to your bike.

Many people wish to change from their stock handlebars to flatter, "cafe" or "drag" style handlebars. Although such bars look very racy, and will certainly give your bike a different feel and riding style, there are some issues to consider when considering such a change.

The OEM handlebars from either the XJ550 models, XJ650RJ Seca models, XJ650 Turbo models, XJ700 models, and XJ750 Seca models are pretty flat, and should clear the fuel tank properly at full lock (something that certain "drag bars" may not be able to do) on almost every XJ model that they are fitted to.....excepting the 1982 XJ750 Maxim, the XJ900RK Seca, and the XJ1100 models, which use adjustable "stub" handlebars that mount in a completely different manner from the round handlebars used on all other models.

Obviously, the Seca models used "flatter and straighter" bars than the other models, as did the XJ650 Turbo models.

Also, be aware that when you go from those hi-rise stock bars to flat bars, you're probably going to have to also change your master cylinder and clutch lever bracket, and may also have to acquire much shorter control cables (clutch and throttle) and possibly the master cylinder brake hose.

Finally, beware of handlebar-to-tank clearance issues when going to flatter bars. One aspect of stock bars that is overlooked is that they have enough "rise" to make prevent the bars from contacting the forward sides of the fuel tank in "full lock" positions. AFTERMARKET BARS WITH A LOW "RISE" MAY HIT THE TANK AT FULL LOCK, OR, PREVENT YOU FROM REACHING FULL LOCK WITHOUT TRAPPING YOUR HANDS BETWEEN THE BARS AND THE TANK. Although this issue can then be "solved" by rotating the bars "upwards" (to get more rise out of the bars), this can typically result in an uncomfortable riding position.


For comparison, below are the dimensions for stock handlebars. Notice that while the XJ550 handlebars have the same "rise" when measured to the grip, that they are much flatter bars than the XJ650 Maxim models (which have the same amount of rise), since the 650 Maxim bars go way "up" and then curve back down, thus ending up at the same relative position as the 550 bars, but without that big "buckhorn" styling.

The XJ650RJ Seca and the XJ650 Turbo bars are the "flattest" and "straightest" of the bunch; the XJ550 and XJ700 bars have some curves to them.


The dimensions specified below have the following meanings. If you remember basic geometry, then in a 3-dimensional diagram, the WIDTH dimension is the x-axis, the RISE is the y-axis, and the PULLBACK is the z-axis. Note that when handlebars are actually installed into their typical position on a bike, the actual (on the bike) RISE and the PULLBACK dimensions will likely differ, as handlebars are rarely installed (or can/will be changed to suit an individual rider) with the bars in a perfectly perpendicular orientation to the steering crown (which is how RISE and PULLBACK are specified for a bar for measurement purposes, i.e. off a bike, sitting on a tabletop, etc.). The WIDTH dimension, of course, is always true, on or off the bike, and that dimensions is not affected by any rotational position within the handlebar holders.

OVERALL WIDTH = the overall width; the widest possible straight-line measurement, measured to the very outer ends of the handlebar.

RISE AT GRIP ENDS: the overall height; measured with the straight center section of the handlebars laying flat on a surface, and then the tallest straight-line "upwards" measurement with the grip ends of the handlebars being horizontally level. Note that on many types of handlebars that raise to a peak and then turn back "down" to the rider, the handlebars are actually "taller" (if laid flat on a surface) than the "rise" dimension indicates......this is because "rise" is calculated at the grip position, not at the tallest point of the bars.

PULLBACK AT GRIP ENDS: the overall depth of the handlebars; measured with the straight center section of the handlebars laying flat on a surface, and with the grip ends of the handlebars being horizontally level, this is the deepest straight-line "rearwards" measurements back to the grip ends of the handlebar.

NOTE: the XH750 Seca bars have numerous handlebar shrouding "tabs" welded onto them along their length, designed to hold the soft vinyl handlebar upper and lower covers, and do not look very attractive when they are un-shrouded, i.e. "naked".

When swapping out the "hi-rise" roto-tiller style bars as used on the XJ650 Maxim or Midnight Maxim, 1983 XJ750 Maxim or Midnight Maxim, or XS1100 Special models to flatter bars, you will also need to make two other changes:

a) substitute an appropriate "horizontally level" style master cylinder. The master cylinder on the above models mounts at about a 40-degree "down-tilted" angle in order to keep the fluid reservoir more-or-less level. On all other models, the master cylinder is completely level with the horizontal when mounted on their (flat) handlebars.....and so if you substitute flat style bars on the XJ650 or XJ750 Maxim models, you'll also have to use the appropriate "flatter-bars" type of master cylinder.

b) the left side clutch lever bracket will also need to be changed, as the left mirror screws into this bracket, and on the "buckhorn bars" style bikes, this bracket has the mirror-mounting boss cast into it at a "tilted" angle, to compensate for the tilt of the bars.......and re-using that bracket on "flat bars" will leave your left-side mirror sticking outwards at a really strange (and very non-useful) angle. You should choose a mirror bracket that is correct for the handlebar that you are using. In most case you should be able to re-use your original clutch hand lever and hardware.

Steering Crowns, Handlebar Risers, and Hardware:

The steering CROWN BRACKET is the cast aluminum piece that your handlebars actually bolt onto, while the RISERS and their associated HOLDER CAPS actually cinch the handlebar to the crown (note: on most models, the risers are actually cast as part of the steering crown bracket itself).

The above pieces rarely every "wear out", but the crown bracket may become damaged in an accident or bike drop, and it is possible to strip out or fracture off a fork tube mounting ear in certain situations.

Handlebar Riser Knurled Stem Installation Hardware:

Models with adjustable handlebars----1982 XJ750 Maxim, XJ900, and XJ1100 models-----used additional fasteners in the handlebar area to locate the lower steering "stem" or riser, and the adjustable mechanisms for the actual handlebars themselves.

XJ750 Seca models, while not using the "infinitely adjustable" handlebar design like the bikes above, also used a lower riser that was not integral to the steering crown, and thus has its own set of special fasteners used to secure the lower stem riser to the steering crown.

Handlebar Adjuster Installation Hardware:

HANDLEBAR GRIPS:

hb23) OEM and aftermarket HANDLEBAR GRIPS restore that like-new feel to your steering, and gives your bike that "brand-new" look.

All original replacement OEM grips use a soft textured rubber pattern that is identical to the original pattern used, and the right side grip includes the plastic throttle tube.

Aftermarket grips come in a variety of textures and styles as described below, and all are packaged as matched right and left sets. The right grip does not include the throttle tube, and your original tube must be re-used and typically must be modified to accept the replacement grip (the raised nibs on the outer end of the tube will need to be shaved down flat).


Besides being more comfortable and, depending on the style selected, more colorful!-----aftermarket grips are available in a variety of different lengths. Stock lengths for original grips are listed below, and the length of the grip determines how far "onto" (length-wise) that the handlebar disappears into the grip inner tube----which also determines, on some models, the placement of the control switches, the master cylinder, and the clutch lever perch. On many models it is possible to use "deeper" (longer) grips than original; it will require either that the switches, etc. be pushed further "inward" on the handlebars (if possible and desired), or, that the grip is not fully driven onto the handlebar. Since the differences in length are rarely over 1/2", the lack of the handlebar being embedded fully into the grip for that short of a distance make no real meaningful difference in performance, although the unsupported part of the grip may feel a little "loose" . Longer grips are sometime preferred by people with extra-large sized hands.

NOTE: if you intend to use the type of bar-end mirrors whose mounting post fits inside of the end of the handlebar tube, be aware that the ends of the grips (original or aftermarket) must be removed so that the mirror clamp can fit inside the handlebar, or, the grips listed below which have "open ends" should be used.


Original Handlebar Grip Depths:

These measurements are the total depth inside the original grip tubes, and thus determined the "fully-flush" distance that the inner end of the grip will be occupy from the end of the handlebar. You can use these measurements to compare against any possible fitment (overhang) issues when using aftermarket grips. Note that less than 5mm (less than 1/4") of difference will not be noticeable, at all, while differences of 10mm or more can be, and differences of 20mm or greater are generally not recommended.

The installation of a new grip (original or aftermarket) is pretty straight-forward: you cut (with a sharp razor blade, x-acto knife, etc.) the old grips off----VERY CAREFULLY on the right side, so as to not damage the plastic throttle tube that is underneath it!----and then clean off all the old goo, adhesive, or debris from the handlebar itself (on the left side) or the plastic throttle tube (on the right side), and then lube up (silicone spray, etc.) the new ones and gently pound them into place!

If you want to add a little adhesive to the left side grip, the best product to use is an aerosol hair spray, it remains slick for a moment or two and then dries very sticky!


A couple of thoughts to consider when purchasing grips:

a) original or aftermarket rubber grips will have the longest life.

b) aftermarket foam grips can be quite comfortable, and will reduce vibration-induced "numbness" of the hands that can occur on longer rides; however, the foam tends to deteriorate after a few years, especially if the bike is left outside or in the weather.

c) CLOSED END grips have their ends closed off (similar to the stock grips on all models except XJ700's and XJ900's, which used OPEN-END grips along with DECORATIVE END CAPS to "tidy-up" their open ends). These grips can have their ends "opened" with the careful use of a razor knife, etc. After such surgery, decorative end caps or bar-end mirrors can be used with these style grips.

d) OPEN-END grips have their ends open (similar to the stock grips used on XJ700's and XJ900's) and traditionally are used with DECORATIVE END CAPS to "tidy-up" their open ends, or with bar-end mirrors.

e) some handlebars have internal "end weights" installed in them that must be removed before any decorative end caps (or post-type bar-end mirrors) can be used. If the ends of your handlebars are not "hollow", then some type of efforts will need to be made to remove or otherwise allow an adequate amount of entry depth into the ends of the handlebars (about 2-3" or so) before decorative end caps or bar-end mirrors can be used.

f) most aftermarket grips can present a challenge to install on the right side throttle tube............it can be an extremely tight fit. The original plastic throttle tube must be re-used, and typically must be modified to accept the replacement grip (the raised nibs on the outer end of the tube will need to be shaved down flat). A coating with some type of silicone spray or a smear of dishwashing liquid soap makes a good lubricant to allow the grip to be installed more easily.

g) although they look (and feel) very nice, be aware that any aftermarket grips that have leather inserts will tend to be extremely slippery when wet, and therefore may present possible safety issues.



Throttle tubes:

Decorative Handlebar End Caps:

These knurled, anodized aluminum end caps insert into the hollow end of your bars and provide a decorative look to this area. It is recommended that the open end style grips from the choices above be used, or, you can modify ("cut open") the ends of your stock and most aftermarket style "closed end" grips.

The end caps have a rubber jacket "expansion bolt" that slips into the internal hollow end of the handlebars (about 1-3/8" deep). A supplied hex tool allows you to "tighten" (expand) this internal bolt and secure the end cap tightly (no, it's not going anywhere!) to the bar end.....a simple, 2-minute installation.

Dual-knurled external rings and a polished, domed end cap makes these a very easy way to add a little bling to your bike! You can choose from a variety of colors to match or contrast with the color scheme of your grips.

End caps protrude out about 1" (total length) from the end of the bars, and are 28mm in diameter.


NOTE: you should check the ends of your handlebars before ordering these caps. Although all stock XJ bars have "hollow" bar ends, some aftermarket bars do not, and over the years, many products have been offered (and many "backyard" products used) to create anti-vibrational "stiffness" to handlebars via the insertion of a semi-rigid metal tube into the handlebars. Obviously, such tubes will interfere, or not allow, the installation of the end caps if the tubes are "flush" with the end of the handlebars.
