FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS:

bp4) Quality OEM and aftermarket DISC BRAKE PADS and hardware to restore proper braking action.

OEM pads feature the original "wear-limit" central slot or markings cut into them, and feature a Semi-metallic friction material for maximum stopping power and better brake-level feel.

Standard aftermarket organic material pads provide original-performance brake lever or pedal "feel", while also being gentle on the rotors and providing excellent stopping friction.

Performance aftermarket metallic/organic material pads provides a compromise between standard organic-material pads and semi-metallic pads......giving a better hand lever or pedal "feel", while also being easy enough on the rotors while providing enhanced stopping friction.

High-performance aftermarket Kevlar or Semi-Metallic sintered material pads provide a much higher coefficient of friction between the pad and the rotor disc, thus providing vastly superior stopping ability and better lever or pedal "feel", while also being dust-free and providing excellent wet-weather performance.


Original brake pad wear limit (thickness) specifications are as follows. Note that some models are specified using the thickness of the pad friction material only, while other models specify the thickness of the friction material AND the pad metal backing plate. In all cases, if your pads use the "wear indicator" groove cut into the centerline of the pad friction material, once that groove disappears, it is time to replace your pads!

XJ550 all models: 4.0mm pad AND metal backing plate thickness, or 0.8mm pad-only thickness.

FJ600 models, front and rear: 0.5mm pad-only thickness.

XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models: 6.5mm pad AND metal backing plate thickness.

XJ650RJ Seca models: 1.5mm pad-only thickness.

XJ650 Turbo models: 0.8mm pad-only thickness.

XJ700 and XJ750-X all models: 0.5mm pad-only thickness.

XJ750 all Maxim and Midnight Maxim models: 0.8mm pad-only thickness.

XJ750 Seca models: 4.0mm pad AND metal backing plate thickness, or 0.8mm pad-only thickness.

XJ900RK all models, front and rear: 0.5mm pad-only thickness.

XJ1100 models, front: 4.0mm pad AND metal backing plate thickness, or 0.8mm pad-only thickness.
XJ1100 models, rear: 1.2mm pad-only thickness.


Your front brake lever should have 5-8mm of free travel before first engaging the master cylinder piston.


NOTE: we recommend that you "chamfer" the edges of all brake pads and shoes before installation, as this modification tends to help prevent brake squeal and noise. "Chamfer" merely means to file a very small 45-degree angle on the very outside edges of the friction material. Our HCP9785 disc brake pad dampening fluid is also very effective at eliminating such noise, as is the HCP26785 brake assembly grease----and to be honest, we recommend the use of all possible methods, as brake squeal is really annoying!


The proper break-in procedure after installing new pads calls for increasingly harder and harder stops over the first few miles. You can review the proper steps here:

Additionally, you should always carefully inspect and replaces as needed the various PAD HARDWARE pieces. Your brake pads generally have one or more SHIMS on their backsides, both to help equalize piston pressure against them and to also serve as anti-squeak devices (they don't always work too well in that capacity, and the use of automotive-chain-store brands of anti-squeak goop can help somewhat in this regard). Some models also used a variety of upper ANTI-RATTLE SPRINGS which normally snap into place on the top of the caliper body, above the pads, which serve as an anti-rattle and alignment device. And most models use either a threaded or un-threaded large diameter pad retaining PIN and associated clips to capture those pins.

NOTE: when installing any of these brake pad kits below, you should check (and correct if necessary) to make sure that your pad guide shim plates do not bind on the pad backing plate. Old guide plates can become mis-shaped (not a perfect square), and the shims need to be slightly modified or the pad openings filed slightly to insure a frictionless, non-binding pad travel along the length of the side shims.
