COOLING SYSTEM PARTS:

The following service parts are for all of the XJ700-X and XJ750-X water-cooled models.

Annoying leaks from the many pipes and tubes can be easily fixed with the assortment of o-rings and gaskets listed below.


Radiator Grill Parts:

HCP21667 Aftermarket water radiator plastic GRILL DRESS-UP KIT.....contains all the pre-cut pieces of silver chrome edge trim needed to enhance the vertical crossbars on the plastic grill, adding a finished and distinctive look to the grill. Each kit contains a total of 34 pieces: 33 short sections (for each of the short horizontal bars in the grill face) and 1 long section (for the lower edge bar). You can use as many (or as few) of short pieces to create a distinctive pattern; you can even spell out the letter "X" in the grill. Adhesive-infused bright silver chrome edge trim fits into place and holds tight, but can still be easily removed in the future.

Coolant System Fluid Transfer Rubber Hoses and Clamps, Plastic Tubes and Joints, Metal Pipes, and O-Rings:

Okay, since there is a maze of hoses, pipes, tubes, and o-rings used on these water-cooled models, to help you navigate the entire system, let's start at the beginning, with the RADIATOR........note that we've color-coded the components to be blue to signify fluid that has been through the radiator and thus cooled, and use red to indicate fluid-handling components involved in the movement of heated fluid that has been through the engine, but not yet returned to the radiator for cooling.


Coming out of the right side of the radiator is the cooled fluid, and it exits the radiator via a short, curved RADIATOR OUTLET HOSE, clamped on each end via the HCP4856 hose clamps, to a long "snake" of a METAL PIPE, which then wraps around the right side of the engine black and goes directly into the WATER PUMP INLET. The HCP4854 o-ring seals this metal pipe where it enters the water pump.

The water pump itself has a number of both rubber o-ring seals (HCP4849 seals the clutch cover gear access cover to the clutch cover, while the large HCP4847 seals the water pump housing cover), the HCP4840 oil seal, and even an internal MECHANICAL SEAL (HCP4843), along with all the typical water-pumpy type of items needed to pressurize the fluid: a vaned impeller connected via a set of gears to a drive shaft, along with the usual assortment of spacers, collars, bearings, etc.

Coming out of the WATER PUMP OUTLET is a right-angle PLASTIC JOINT, sealed to the water pump via the HCP4859 o-ring, leading directly into a short METAL CONNECTOR PIPE (sealed on both its inlet and outlet ends by the HCP4861 o-rings) that transfers the fluid to the two PLASTIC INLET JOINTS bolted to the cylinder jugs. These two plastic inlet joints are connected to each other via a short METAL TRANSFER PIPE, sealed on either end to those plastic inlet joints via the HCP4869 o-rings) and all of the above joints use their own unique HCP4864 oval rings where they mate to the cylinder jugs.

Then, after the fluid has run around inside the upper end of the engine for a while and gotten hot, it exits the rear of the cylinder head via two METAL RETURN PIPES, each one using one of the HCP4869 o-ring at these pipe-to-cylinder head joints. These metal pipes are clamped to RUBBER RETURN HOSES that go to the thermostat housing; coming out of this thermo housing is the large RUBBER RETURN HOSE to the inlet flange (upper) on the radiator itself, where the HCP4856 screw clamp holds it firmly in place.

Of course, all of the large rubber hoses have a worm-screw style CLAMP to secure it to it mating tube or flange, while the smaller hoses use a spring or scissors type clamp or clip.

A couple of other points of interest and we'll conclude our tour: coming out of the water pump is a small diameter SYSTEM BY-PASS HOSE which runs to the right side metal return pipe (coming out of the cylinder head), and is held in place by the HCP4876 spring clips on each end. The by-pass hose is an "emergency escape valve" in case any part of the system gets partially or fully blocked. It is secured on each end by a special clip-type clamp.

Finally, there is the plastic OVERFLOW TANK or RESERVOIR which takes in or releases fluid from a long rubber OVERFLOW HOSE hose that runs from a small nipple coming off the PRESSURE CAP HOUSING to the inlet nipple on the bottom of the overflow tank; the HCP122 or HCP16428 spring type pinch clamp is used on the radiator cap housing end of this hose, while the HCP6142 scissors clip cinches this hose to the overflow tank.

The top of the overflow tank is home to a small rubber VENT and DRAIN HOSE that takes care of massive fluid overflows; this thin rubber hose attaches to the overflow tank via a small, flexible, rubber accordion boot (there is no tank nipple for this drain hose, just a round hole in the top of the tank) and then is routed down the left side frame tube and then in-between the #2 and #3 exhaust header pipes, captured by a little clamp on the frame cross tube (above the oil filter housing), and then just dangles down unceremoniously toward the ground, waiting to puke out any massively over-heated engine coolant onto the ground, directly in the travel path of your rear wheel......


Hoses and Clamps:

Use 6 per bike in the following locations: 1 at each end of the thermostat housing-to-pressure cap housing transfer hose joints, and 1 at each end of the fluid return hoses, both at their metal pipe connection and the thermostat housing ends. Each:

Water Pipe Fitting Seals and O-rings:

HCP4869 OEM metal pipe round O-RING, use one on each of the metal radiator return pipes where they exit the cylinder head, and one on each end of the cylinder head inlet joints metal transfer pipe ends (where the metal transfer pipe joins into the plastic cylinder head inlet joints) There are thus a total of 4 of these o-rings used per engine. Radiator Coolant:

The use of the proper, non-corrosive and compatible radiator COOLANT is especially important on aluminum engines, as many of the typical additives in standard coolant products contain chemicals that will lead to the corrosion of aluminum and the build-up of hard deposits that will reduce the cooling effectiveness of your system.

We offer both a conventional ethylene-glycol based coolant and an environmentally-friendly, non-poisonous propylene-glycol based fluid, both pre-mixed at a proper ratio, to provide both temperature protection from 26 degree below zero to 265-F and will not harm or clog your expensive X engine!


The factory recommends a coolant change every 24 months, using an ethylene-glycol based coolant (or equivalent) with anti-corrosion inhibitors for aluminum system, mixed 50% with water. The fluid capacity of the entire system is 2.5 quarts, and another 0.5 quart for the reservoir......so a single gallon bottle of pre-mixed coolant will do you well.

The proper fluid drain, change, and refill procedure involves removing the radiator cap, then the radiator drain plug, and finally removing all 5 of the small drain bolts located at various positions on the system:

* the 2 small drain bolts located on the front of the cylinder jugs (just outside of the #1 and #4 exhaust header pipes)
* the 1 small drain bolt located on the rear side of the cylinder jugs
* the 1 small drain bolt located on the bottom of the thermostat housing
* and 1 final small drain bolt located on the metal pipe that snakes around the right side of the engine, from the radiator outlet to the water pump inlet.

All of these small drain bolts and the radiator drain plug use thin gaskets which should be renewed.

Now let all of the fluid drain, which may take a while, and then replace all of the drain bolts and the radiator drain plug (do not overtighten!)

Remove the plastic fluid overflow tank and reservoir and clean it out thoroughly.

Finally, refill the system slowly from the radiator cap, and let air bubbles work their way out of the system (it takes time!). Remember that the overflow tank and reservoir takes fluid from the radiator cap neck, so until the system is full, none of the fluid is going to fill the reservoir!

Once full, start the engine and let it warm up with the cap off. Keep re-filling the system until it is completely full. Make sure that the fan comes on once the gauge moves into the "red zone", and also check to make sure that the thermostat is working correctly.

Now dispose of the old coolant properly, replace the radiator cap, and go for a ride!
