ENGINE SIDE COVERS AND HARDWARE:

Oil Pump Covers:

ecc4) Engine OIL PUMP COVERS are also commonly known as "crankshaft end covers" or "YICS covers". These are the small, rounded covers directly below the cylinders, at the very front of the engine. Replacement covers, gaskets, and mounting hardware is listed below. NOTE: these are NOT the finned oil filter element cover!! The oil filter element cover can be found in the Oiling Systems section of the catalog!

NOTE: if the threaded holes in the engine case have minor damage, they can be easily salvaged with a thread-chaser/tap:


HCP2399 Aftermarket THREAD CHASER AND CLEAN-UP TAP, made from a high-speed titanium nitride coated steel. For the following threaded holes listed below, as well as many other areas of the bike. This 6 x 1.00 pitch is a very common sized thread.

- XJ700-X and XJ750-X cylinder heads and jugs coolant jacket bolt holes.
- Some models: cylinder head cam chain tunnel-to-cylinder jugs cinching studs, for engines that have 2 studs on both the front and rear of the tunnel (models with a single tunnel stud use the HCP11028 tap listed further below).
- Most models: upper crankcase to cylinder jugs stud.
- All models: cam chain tensioner mounting bolt holes.
- Some models: mechanical tachometer drive housing mounting hole.

Oil Pump Cover Emblems:

These crankshaft round end cover EMBLEMS feature a self-adhesive backing and have the raised, impressed stylized "YICS" or “DOHC” wording against a flat-black background as original.

Oil Pump Cover Gaskets:

ec2) OEM oil pump/crankshaft end cover ("YICS covers" on models so equipped) GASKET. A great idea to replace these if you remove the case covers. Although these gaskets don't seal any fluids, you don't really want grime and gunk and junk accumulating inside the covers.

OEM oil pump cover gaskets are made from a standard duty, graphite impregnated paper material. We recommend the use of the aftermarket hi-performance paper gaskets which are designed to slightly swell in the presence of petroleum products (fuel or oil), thus creating a super-tight, leak-proof flange seal.


HCP998 OEM oil pump covers or "YICS" covers standard duty paper GASKET. Originally used under the left side cover only, but many people like to install one under the right side cover also, and they will fit either side properly. ec4) OEM SHIFTER COVER GASKETS. A must-replace item anytime you remove the shifter cover (left side of the bike) for periodic cleaning or shifter mechanism adjustment, repair, or replacement.

And while you've got the cover off on your XJ550 - XJ900 engine, we would also strongly recommend the replacement of the internal breather covers (small and large) gaskets. Bolted on the inside of the shifter cover are two metal compartments, and between those compartments and the shifter cover are the breather gaskets. The internal structure of these breather compartments create an intricate series of grooves and channels, which are designed to separate the water and air that are trapped in the oil from crankcase pressure. The oil is recovered and the air and water vapour are supposed to exit through the breather hose.

If you look behind the shifter plate you'll likely find that these breather case gaskets are hard and impermeable, and the separation chambers and channels are coated or plugged. In this situation, the engine has a very difficult time "breathing" and relieving the internal crankcase pressures, and oil, water, air mixture can be forced into areas you don't normally see oil.

The small round rubber oil seal (HCP490) where the shifter lever shaft comes through the shifter cover is a common source of leaks on these bikes.


OEM shifter cover gaskets are made from a standard duty, graphite impregnated paper material. Clutch Case Cover Gaskets:

ec4) OEM CLUTCH COVER GASKETS. A must-replace item anytime you remove the clutch cover (right side of the bike) for periodic cleaning or clutch plate adjustment, repair, or replacement.

OEM clutch cover gaskets are made from a standard duty, graphite impregnated paper material. We recommend the use of the aftermarket hi-performance paper gaskets which are designed to slightly swell in the presence of petroleum products (fuel or oil), thus creating a super-tight, leak-proof flange seal.

Steel is harder than aluminum, so you know what's going to distort, deform, or strip first...the threaded bore holes. The following professional quality tool-steel metric cutting taps will allow you to either "clean-up" or re-thread distorted or stripped threads in all metals, soft (aluminum) to hard (steel). c9a) THREAD CHASER DIES. Unlike the thread taps listed above, these thread DIES are used to clean, restore, and repair threads on the threaded fasteners (screws, bolts, studs, etc.). These tools help restore that like-new feel to used bolts, and straighten and restore threads to allow for proper torque settings to be achieved and maintained. Unlike standard round dies, these dies feature cutting teeth within a standard “hex-nut” shape, so you can use a wrench or socket to hold the die and turn it over the fastener. Just like cleaning / chasing threaded holes with a tap, this task is easy to use, important to do, and when you’re done you’ll be glad you took the time to do the job properly!
