SPIN-ON OIL FILTER CONVERSION KIT:

os1) Aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit....okay, the original Yamaha cartridge oil filter system is "adequate", but for real oil filtering capabilities and ease of filter replacement---not to mention a certain cool-factor!---you really want to upgrade the factory system to an automotive-type spin-on "can" filter. Doing so not only gets you better oil filtration, easier (much easier) oil changes, but also eliminates the oil cleaner cover, the easy-to-strip by-pass bolt, and all the other associated o-rings and seals needed when performing an oil change using a stock system.

This system consists of six pieces:

a) a precision-machined aluminum filter Adapter Plate and mounting Nut.
b) a threaded mounting Stud and a corresponding stud installation Tool.
c) a plate-to-block O-ring Seal.
d) your choice of a variety of quality spin-on mini-can oil filter.
e) installation instructions.

This kit contains everything you'll need to replace your original set-up on any XJ550, 1984-85 FJ600, 1986-88 FZ600, 1986-90 YX600 Radian, all XJ650, all XJ700, all XJ750, and all XJ900 models. NOTE: these conversion kits will work on both all original non-oil-cooler equipped models, as well as on all factory oil-cooler-equipped models without the use of any additional parts.

These kits will require approximately 2-4 hours for installation on a bike with an original exhaust header pipes, and does NOT require the removal of a stock exhaust system. Included in that amount of installation time is the typical "oil change" time (draining and refilling crankcase). Models using the factory oil cooler system will require slightly longer.

The Adapter Plate in this spin-on filter kit replaces the entire outer filter cover (and all its mounting and internal pieces) on all models, and together with the filter is only about 1" longer in overall length than the stock filter system---so clearance against the frame rails and exhaust headpipes is not an issue on a stock exhaust system.

Additionally, all of the mini-can filters that we offer measure only about 2-3/4" in diameter, which means you should NOT have any problems with accessing them via through the clearance in-between the #2 and #3 exhaust header pipes on a stock system (you may wish to verify clearance on your own bike). Aftermarket exhaust systems MAY pose some challenges in this regard, and due to the variety of different systems on the market, you should measure your system to determine the ease of access.

The HCP1284FR kit features a much larger spin-on can filter which, while no longer than the mini-can filters, is almost 3-3/4" in diameter, and thus will not fit many models that have less than that distance between the #2 and #3 exhaust header pipes. You will need to measure this distance on your bike (and exhaust system), at the widest point, to verify fitment.

Adapter Installation Tools:

HCP22947 Aftermarket standard-depth 30mm SOCKET, 1/2-drive thin-wall style that will work properly with the HCP1284 spin-on oil filter adapter kit that we offer. Because of the very close tolerances between the outside faces of the nut and the adapter plate recess, you'll need a very thin-wall socket to tighten this nut with. Chrome-plated, 12-point, 1-/2" drive. NOTE: this is a standard (rather than deep) depth socket, and thus it may not work on some models. Yamaha drilled the threaded depth of the oil passage hole (in the engine case, where the threaded stud in our conversion kit will thread into) different lengths on different engines. Since the stud used with our kits must be fully threaded (i.e. bottomed ) into this threaded hole to work properly, that in turn will leave exposed, on the filter side of the plate, a different length of threads on which to install the retaining nut. And since this socket is used to tighten the retaining nut onto the protruding threads of the stud that sticks up from the adapter plate, there may be engines that have the passage hole drilled shallow, thus resulting in more exposed stud threads protruding from the adapter plate & & &enough extra thread (4-5) that will not allow this standard-depth socket to fully fit over (and thus fully reach  and tighten the retaining nut all the way down as required). Our experience shows that about 80% of engines have their passage hole drilled deeply enough to allow the use of this standard depth socket to fully tighten the retaining nut without bottoming out. For the other 20% of engines ---- you ll need to use one of the deep-drive sockets listed below. Unfortunately, we have no way of telling whether your particular engine has the deeply threaded hole (and thus allows the use of this socket) or not & &it appears to be a random thing.

ORIGINAL OIL FILTER ELEMENTS:

The best way to extend the life and performance of your engine is to keep your engine oil changed regularly. The factory specified service interval for an oil change is:

* every 2,500 miles on all XJ550, XJ650, XJ750, and XJ1100 models
* every 4,000 miles on all XJ700 and XJ900 models.

Strangely, Yamaha recommends a oil filter change only on every-other oil change:

* every 5,000 miles on all XJ550, XJ650, XJ750, and XJ1100 models
* every 8,000 miles on all XJ700 and XJ900 models.

On our bikes, we change the oil filter element every time that we change the oil, and recommend that you do the same.

NOTE: the following capacities are quoted from the factory service manuals for a Full Oil Change with Filter Change . The total maximum oil capacity for the different bikes is slightly higher (normally by about ½ US quart, or 400cc), but since a regular oil/filter change never actually drains ALL of the oil from the engine, these are the proper starting point refill capacities to use:

XJ550: 2.6 US Quart/2500cc
FJ600 (1984-85): 2.7 US Quart / 2600cc
XJ600 Seca II: 2.6 US Quart / 2500cc
XJ650 non-Turbo: 2.8 US Quart/2650cc
XJ650 Turbo: 3.1 US Quart/2900cc
XJ700 all: 3.0 US Quart/2800cc
XJ750 all: 3.0 US Quart/2800cc
XJ900RK: 3.0 US Quart/2800cc
XJ1100: 3.70 US Quart/3500cc

Always remember to follow the proper procedure for checking oil capacity after a filter change:

- place bike on the CENTERstand.
- warm engine up for several minutes; shut off; wait 2 minutes for all oil to drain back into crankcase.
- observe oil level in the "sight glass" at the bottom of the clutch cover.
- oil should be visible in the sight window and be at least to the halfway (vertical) level. If not, add SMALL amounts of oil an re-check. Do NOT overfill!
- if the oil level warning light or icon (in the gauges) lights up when engine is operated, shut engine off and follow procedure above for checking oil. NOTE: under very hard acceleration or extreme cornering, a brief flicker of the oil light may occur without indicating an immediate problem..


NOTE: on all paper oil filter elements, the "flat" face of the filter element faces TOWARDS the engine, and the "concave" face of the filter element goes towards the filter housing cover (facing away from the engine case). Sitting within both openings of the oil filter element are the filter grommets. On the "concave" side of the filter, then comes the HCP1493 flat washer, followed by the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression spring, and finally then the outer cover.


m7) OEM and aftermarket pleated paper OIL FILTER ELEMENT.

The original OEM filters include the filter grommets, but neither the large cover-to-block o-ring nor the bypass valve bolt o-ring.

Aftermarket pleated paper FRAM OIL FILTER ELEMENT includes the filter grommets, the large cover-to-block o-ring, and the bypass valve bolt o-ring.

The K&N "PERFORMANCE GOLD" OIL FILTER ELEMENT includes the filter element grommets, but neither the large cover-to-block o-ring, nor the bypass valve bolt o-ring.


COMMENTARY: many people have read reviews or seen comments to the effect that "Fram oil filters are junk, etc.". While this claim may or may not be true in regards to their automotive line of can filters, this may not apply to their motorcycle line of filters (which I've used for years on my bikes). There is really nothing in the world that could be simpler than a motorcycle filter for these Yamaha's. If it's a concern to you, then of course order an OEM filter or the K&N filter, they're all so cheap that it hardly makes an economic difference one way or the other, but just thought you'd like to know!

Also available separately are the oil filter element rubber GROMMETS, use 2 per filter, they fit onto both sides of the filter element. All of the original and aftermarket oil filter elements come with these grommets.

Finally, we also offer the OEM oil filter element COMPRESSION SPRING and its spring seat PLATE WASHER, use 1 per filter. It's a good idea to replace these every once in a while (perhaps after every 8-10 oil changes). The spring seat washer serves as the "base" for the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression springs, and is fitted to the "concave" face of the filter element.

OIL FILTER COVER BOLT and BY-PASS VALVE:

dd) OEM and aftermarket oil filter PRESSURE RELIEF BYPASS VALVE & COVER MOUNTING BOLT.....this is the bolt that holds the oil filter cover housing to the block (for standard AND factory oil-cooler equipped models). OEM and aftermarket versions of this machined steel bolt and oil pressure by-pass assembly correctly replace the original bolt. Comes with its o-ring.

NOTE: the aftermarket version of this bolt has a much larger 17mm hex head instead of the rather small factory 12mm hex head. This larger head means that you won't strip it off as easily as is the case with a frozen stock bolt. But, in case you do come across one of these bolts that is seized frozen tight, here s how to make it take one for the team  and get it off:

SO PLEASE!: always use anti-seize compound on the threads when installing this bolt! The proper torque settings for these bolts on all XJ engines (except 1100cc) is 11 foot-pounds, and no more! The XJ1100 and XS1100 models require 23 foot-pounds of torque.

OIL FILLER CAPS AND DRAIN PLUGS:

PLEASE!: always use anti-seize compound on the threads when installing any of these bolts! The proper torque settings is 31 foot-pounds when used as an oil pan drain plug, and 16 foot-pounds when used as a final drive filler or drain plugs. The middle gear drain plug is specified at 11.5 foot-pounds. Do not over-tighten!


NOTE and commentary: we highly recommend the use of the magnetic style drain plugs in both the crankcase oil pan and the final drive drain holes. It's an added measure of safety to trap metallic particles and keep them from circulating suspended in the oil.

The various magnetic drain plugs listed below have the following characteristics that should be considered when deciding on which one to purchase:


HCP1656 Aftermarket magnetic Oil Port Plug---has the strongest magnetic pull of them all, but has the smallest hex head size of the bunch (14mm).

HCP1472 OEM magnetic Oil Port Plug----magnetic pull is "okay", but not anywhere as strong as the HCP1656 plug above. However, this drain plug does have a 9mm extended "probe" or tip which is the magnetized part, and thus it would extended further into the oil flow than any of the other drain plugs listed. This plug has a large 17mm hex head.

HCP1654 aftermarket plug---very weak magnetic pull. Has a 19mm head.

HCP23863 aftermarket plug---magnetic pull is "okay", but not anywhere as strong as the HCP1656 plug above. Has a 19mm head.

HCP1477 oem non-magnetic plug---obviously, no magnetic pull at all. On the plus side, it has the large 17mm head, and it's the least expensive of the bunch.

This drain bolt is extremely hard to get at while the exhaust is on the bike, and it is rather fragile and easy to shear off when attempting to loosen. It is really intended to be used as a drain port when the engine is out of the bike, before splitting the cases. The middle gear area that this port provides access to only holds about a half-cup of oil, and that oil will be "changed" via mixing with the fresh oil added to the crankcase during an oil change.

NOTE: both the original Yamaha service manuals and the Haynes workshop manual lists the wrong torque specification for this bolt.....way too high!....and thus further risks shearing off this soft, fragile bolt. ENGINE OILS:

Which type and brand should you use? Great question! Here's a bit of an answer:

NOTE: Yamaha specifies the use of API "SE" or "SF" grade oil in all XJ models, but that is based on the original (at that time) automotive motor oil standards.....which, as the above article notes, are no longer valid in the current lubrication industry environment and classifications. Therefore we recommend that the oil you choose should meet or exceed the JASO "MA" duty rating, and all of the oils below exceed that standard. Do not EVER use synthetic oils unless they are specifically designed for motorcycle engines using wet clutch systems (as these bikes do use), as you will end up with a slipping clutches (both drive clutch and especially the starter clutch). Additionally, do not use "automotive" grade oils that have friction modifiers (reduced-friction additives) as these will cause the same problems.

The factory recommends the use of 10W30 oil when the outside temperature will never exceed 60-F, or 20W40 if the outside temperature is always above 40-F. Unfortunately, 20W40 oil is difficult to find anymore, but there is not an issue with using a straight 40W oil, or 10W40, 15W40, or 20W50 formulations instead.

All XJ-series engines require somewhere from 2.5 quarts to 3.0 quarts for an oil change (depending on whether the filter is replaced or not) except for the 1100 engines, which require slightly under a gallon to accomplish an oil and filter change.

Engine Oil System Additives, Lubricants, and Oil Flush:

When storing an engine for a long period of time.........such as during the winter off-season.......it is beneficial to protect the internal combustion chamber surfaces with a protective film of oil to prevent rust. Our aerosol FOGGING OIL products makes that a quick and simple task.

For engines that may have suffered from poor (or unknown) maintenance or oil change routines, it can be useful to perform a solvent-enhanced ENGINE OIL FLUSH routine.....adding a specific amount of a solvent to the engine oil, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature, and then draining the oil, re-filling, and draining again (to insure that all solvent has been removed).

HCP20849 Aftermarket ENGINE OIL ENEMA TREATMENT, the use of approximately 8-10 ounces of this product --- added to the crankcase before an oil change --- helps to loosen up accumulated crud and debris inside the crankcase, and thus allows it to be washed out and drained away with a fluid and filter change. NOTE: we advise that you add this oil treatment to an already warm engine, and then start and run the engine for approximately 15 minutes or so at idle, blipping the throttle occasionally (make sure you have a fan blowing on the engine to prevent overheating!). This will circulate the solvents throughout the engine and transmission fully, allowing it to be more effective.

Although some sources recommend adding this product to the oil and then driving around for 30 miles or so (in order to fully circulate the solvent), we prefer to not put any load on the engine while this product is in the oil. Additionally, since this product may cause engine gasket or seal deterioration (if left in the oil for an extended period of time), our usage recommendations are:

a) this oil flush be added to the crankcase, and follow the recommended usage time as listed above.

b) the engine oil and flush mix be drained completely, and then an oil and filter change be performed as usual.

c) this new fresh oil and filter be used for approximately 200 miles or so, and then an oil change and filter replacement be performed again, thus insuring that all of the oil flush is completely removed.

The above procedure may seem a bit pricey, but a gallon of oil and a filter is quite a bit cheaper----and a lot less aggravating!----than having to replace leaking engine seals or gaskets.

Recommended usage interval: every 12,500 miles (or every 5th oil change).

OIL LEVEL SENDING UNIT:

aa) OEM and aftermarket OIL LEVEL SENDING UNITS & PARTS. The oil level sending unit is located in the center of the oil pan, secured by two small bolts, and has a lead wire coming out of it. Its purpose is to trigger a dash light if it senses a low oil LEVEL (not oil pressure, but merely the oil level in the pan). It is common for the oil sender to trigger the dash warning light very briefly during a cold start, hard acceleration, or going up a steep hill......especially if the amount of oil in the engine is slightly below full. These sending units contain a float inside a metal can, and over time, the float can become jammed or sluggish in its movement due to oil sludge accumulation.......many "bad" oil level senders can be re-habilitated by a thorough flush with a solvent such as kerosene, etc. If you find oil leaking from around this unit, you will need to replace the o-ring seal (which requires removal of the exhaust system). NOTE: all original and replacement oil level sending units have a small alignment mark case into the base of the housing, and the sending units needs to be installed with that mark aligned with a similar cast mark on the crankcase opening.

NOTE: when swapping engines (or oil pans/sensors) beware of these differences:

- the HCP700 (analog gauge) sensor is a N.C. (normally closed) style switch when the oil level is at a correct level, while the HCP701 (computer dash) sensor is a N.O. (normally open) switch when the oil level is at a correct level. Thus these sensors, If swapped between bikes, will not give proper signaling to their warning lights or read-outs!

OIL PUMPS:

Since oil is the lifeblood of your engine, then your OIL PUMP is its strong, beating heart........yuk, who writes that kind of stuff? Anyway, your oil pump is a durable little beast, and rarely fails, but whenever you have your engine apart you should renew the mounting o-rings and replace the drive chain, at least, and measure the gear-to-pump clearance to make sure it is in specification. Additionally, the 550 engines used a separate oil pressure relief valve and oil pick-up screen that need to be attended to during engine rebuilds.

OIL SUPPLY LINES:

While most of the oil supply distribution throughout the engine is via internal passages and galleries, some engines use EXTERNAL OIL SUPPLY PIPES to feed various area with a dedicated supply of fresh oil. Although the hard metal pipes rarely cause any problems, the union bolts and gaskets that hold the pipes to their feed ports can develop leaks over time.


XJ650 Turbocharger Oil Supply Lines:

The oil pressure and return lines for the turbocharger endure an amazing amount of heat, and as such, are likely to suffer from deterioration and failure. The turbo unit uses a "floating" bearing design that allows the impeller to spin up to----get this!----220,000 rpm's, and it's life depend entirely upon its bearing getting enough oil to properly "float". This requires adequate volume and pressure of oil......so leaks anywhere in this system are frowned upon in a very critical manner. Below is a selection of the proper O-RINGS, GASKETS, and HARDWARE pieces necessary to insure all is well with these crucial lines.

The parts list below starts at the "beginning" of the oil flow, at the oil filter housing, and works its way through until the end, where the return line terminates at the scavenge pump.

OIL COOLERS:

All of the following parts are for the ORIGINAL YAMAHA OIL COOLERS only, and will not fit on any aftermarket style oil coolers.

Generally, the factory oils coolers as used on XJ650 Turbo, XJ650, XJ750, and various XJ900 models are very reliable and trouble-free. However, the o-rings and dowel pins should be replaced whenever the cooler lines are disturbed or show evidence of leaking.

Sometimes it s really tough to keep your cool..........especially if you re an air-cooled engine stuck in traffic in the middle of a global-warming summer. Not to worry, we ve got what s needed for you to keep your cool and still look good while doing so.

Unknown to many owners, Yamaha actually equipped most of their rest-of-the-world XJ models --- in Euroland, in the Land Down Under, in the Land of the Rising Sun, etc. ---- with oil coolers from the factory. It was only here in North American that the XJ550, XJ650 Maxim and *XJ650RJ Seca, and the XJ750 models were left to fend for themselves. Combined with the penchant for Yamaha to lean tune  their engines to meet EPA emissions requirements, this is an unfortunate circumstance, and keeping your engine oil cool is THE best way to insure internal engine longevity.

Why did this happen? It certainly isn t due to geographic considerations & &..London, England and Paris, France are certainly not hotter locales than, let s say, Yuma Arizona or anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line & &.no, it was most probably a cost-savings measure in that era of cost-conscious buyers. The only North American models that got the oil coolers were the XJ650 Turbo (or otherwise the engine would have dropped dead after 10,000 miles or so) and the one-year-only XJ900 flagship  models (*actually, late-year XJ650RJC Seca Canadian models &.the ones painted red &..also came with factory oil coolers, but most probably they were already-completed bikes destined for the European market that were hastily converted  to a North American model to meet an unexpected demand for these bikes --- or to dump them ---- in the Canadian marketplace).

We ve now assembled correct, true bolt-in  FACTORY OIL COOLER KITS that allow you to upgrade your engine to the same standards that the rest of the world has enjoyed for 30+ years. Luckily for us, all XJ650 and all XJ750 air-cooled model frames already have the oil radiator mounting holes tapped in the front frame cross-bar, and the XJ650RJ Seca and all XJ750 air-cooled models have the small split-ring  bracket under the steering pipe where the top of the oil radiator is secured & & &..so there s no cutting, welding, drilling, or fabricating necessary to install these kits. And since they re put together from a combination of original and refurbished OEM parts, they ll fit first time, every time & & &.so you can get your kool on with just a few hours work.

The XJ650 Maxim models will require the installation of an upper cooler retaining "loop bracket", which is included with those kits.

All systems will fit bikes with stock or aftermarket exhaust, with or without fairings, and require simple tools to install.

Oil Cooler System Adapter Housing:

HCP3140 OEM oil cooler mounting ADAPTER HOUSING, this is the large cast aluminum finned plate that fits against the crankcase and accepts the lower ends of the oil cooler hoses. For all 1984-85 FJ600, 1986-88 FZ600, 1989-90 XJ600, XJ650, XJ750, and all XJ900RK and RL models with a factory-installed oil cooler. Necessary when adding a factory oil cooler to a non-factory cooler model. This is NOT the finned outer oil filter "cover" that the oil filter element lives within (that filter housing cover is the same on factory oil cooler and non-oil cooler models). This housing does not include but requires the installation of the HCP3141 bypass valve PLUNGER, the HCP3142 bypass valve SPRING, the HCP3143 bypass valve CAP WASHER, and the HCP3144 CIRCLIP in order to be a "complete" adapter plate. Oil Cooler System Adapter Housing Union Bolt:

We now have available the large hex-headed Oil Cooler Adapter Housing UNION BOLT. This is the bolt that has both external threads (where the bolt threads into the engine block) and the internal threads (where the oil filter housing cover/bypass valve bolt threads into). This "union" bolt is what actually holds the oil cooler adapter housing to the block. Many of the used factory oil coolers that are found for sale have all the component pieces needed to install a factory cooler onto a non-cooler bike EXCEPT FOR THIS BOLT, and without it, well, it just ain't gonna happen---this is a very specialized design bolt. For all XJ550 models (with or without the oil cooler), all XJ650 Turbo models, and all XJ900RK models, or on any XJ model adapting a factory oil cooler to a non-oil cooler model.

The large, flat, special thickness washer that goes with this bolt is also available and is listed separately, as well as many of the various factory oil cooler repair pieces, including the adapter plate and associated parts.
