This switch is fitted up inside the engine case, behind the shifter cover, on XJ550 models, or into the bottom or the crankcase on all XJ650-up models, just to the left of the oil pan, and determines whether the transmission is in neutral. On the XJ650-up models, it is very difficult to access (or even see) this switch when the engine is in the bike and/or with the exhaust system in place:

HCP15718 Aftermarket neutral position switch REMOVAL SOCKET. On many models, it's almost a physical impossibility to remove the HCP443 (or the aftermarket version, HCP15671) neutral switch from the crankcase "well" without removing the exhaust system or removing the engine from the frame.....the left lower frame tube conspires with the exhaust system to make it unbelievably difficult to access the switch. This special "open side" socket is the proper size to squirm through those restricted spaces and make it possible to remove and re-install the position switch without going through a tremendous amount of effort. Standard 1/4" drive socket should be used with a 3" extension bar, or, it's even easier to use when attached to the HCP13516 flexible shaft driver listed below. NOTE: this tool will not help you on XJ650 Maxim models with the stock exhaust system, as the crossover pipe is in the way and prevents access of even this tool.

ssr1) OEM safety system SIDESTAND SAFETY SWITCH RELAY.

Identification: the Sidestand Safety Switch Relay is a small square metal "cube" relay, has a blue paint "dot" by the locking tab, and has the following 4 wires connected to it:

- XJ550 all models, 1982-84 XJ650 all model, XJ700 all models, XJ750 all models, XJ900RK Seca models, and XJ1100 models: a solid black wire, a red wire with a white tracer stripe, a black wire with a white tracer stripe, and a blue wire with a yellow tracer stripe.

NOTE: original relays were always a square metal cube style, although they may have been replaced by an plastic-cased cube relay.


HCP433 OEM safety system SIDESTAND SAFETY SWITCH RELAY. For all XJ550, FJ600, 1982-84 all XJ650 models, all XJ750, XJ900RK and F models, and XJ1100 models. Small plastic "cube" type relay has 4U8 inked on the top face and has a blue-painted locking tab for identification. NOTE: original relay has a metal lid; these superseded relays have a plastic case, but function the same. Rubber mounting grommet is included.

nss1) OEM safety system NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH RELAY. This relay is also called a starting circuit cut-off relay or an ignition cut-off relay, depending which manual you are reading!

Identification: the Neutral Safety Switch Relay is a small square metal "cube" relay, has no paint "dot" by the locking tab, and has the following 4 wires connected to it:

- XJ550 all models, XJ650 all model, XJ750 all models, and XJ1100: a solid light blue wire, a red wire with a white tracer stripe, another red wire with a white tracer stripe, and a black wire with a yellow tracer stripe.

- XJ900 models: two solid light blue wires ganged together into one terminal slot, two red wires with a white tracer stripe ganged together into one terminal slot, a white wire with a red tracer stripe, and a black wire with a yellow tracer stripe.

NOTE: original relays were always a square metal cube style, although they may have been replaced by a plastic-case relay. THIS RELAY IS A SPECIALIZED DESIGN AND THE USE OF A STANDARD RELAY IS DANGEROUS!-----it will allow the safety function to be defeated and could result in different operation from what is intended.


HCP431 OEM safety system NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH RELAY. For all XJ550, XJ650, XJ750, all XJ900RK, RL, and N/FN models, and XJ1100 models. The original style metal "cube" type relay has 4H7 inked on the top face and has an un-marked (no paint color) locking tab for identification; this later-style replacement has a plastic body and is marked 12R-01 on the top face. These stretchy rubber relay HOLDER GROMMETS replace missing or damaged originals, and help keep your cube relays firmly in place where they belong. Slotted top edge slips over original metal bracket.

FRONT MASTER CYLINDER BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH:

NOTE: except on the XJ750 Seca and XJ900RK models, the removal of these switches from the master cylinder housing seems like a trick Chinese puzzle, until you figure it out.....there is small, round hole (about 2mm diameter) on the forward side of the housing where this switch plugs in. Using a small screwdriver or other such object, gently push in through this hole onto the plastic "tooth" that is part of the switch housing, while also pulling back on the switch. Releasing this ratchet tooth will release the switch from the housing, and out it comes! Here's a good image of it:

CLUTCH HAND LEVER SWITCH:

Using a small screwdriver or other such object, gently push in through this hole onto the plastic "tooth" that is part of the switch housing, while also pulling back on the switch. Releasing this ratchet tooth will release the switch from the housing, and out it comes!

- the XJ750 Seca brake hand lever position switch (HCP3413) can be modified to be used in place of the no-longer-available XJ750 Seca clutch hand lever position switch (HCP453). The brake hand lever switch will need to be modified in the following manner:

1) One of the male bullet wire-end terminals will need to be cut off, and a female wire-end terminal (HCP9366BR) and matching sheath (HCP9322) will need to be installed in place of the removed male bullet terminal.

NOTE: to perform this modification, you will need the following tools: wire cutters, wire crimpers, solder, soldering iron, electrical tape. The modification will require about 15-30 minutes time, depending on your level of skill!


2) Although the lead-wire colors will be different from original, this will not be a problem as long as you properly attach the modified clutch hand switch lead wires to their proper leads inside the headlight housing (the clutch hand switch lead wires from the main harness, located inside the main headlight bucket, are a Black with a yellow tracer stripe wire with a sheathed female bullet wire-end terminal, and a Bright Blue with a yellow tracer stripe wire with a male bullet wire-end terminal. It does matter which of the two switch lead wires that you modify (by removing the male bullet terminal and replacing it with a female bullet terminal).

OIL LEVEL SENDING UNIT:

aa) OEM and aftermarket OIL LEVEL SENDING UNITS & PARTS. The oil level sending unit is located in the center of the oil pan, secured by two small bolts, and has a lead wire coming out of it. Its purpose is to trigger a dash light if it senses a low oil LEVEL (not oil pressure, but merely the oil level in the pan). It is common for the oil sender to trigger the dash warning light very briefly during a cold start, hard acceleration, or going up a steep hill......especially if the amount of oil in the engine is slightly below full. These sending units contain a float inside a metal can, and over time, the float can become jammed or sluggish in its movement due to oil sludge accumulation.......many "bad" oil level senders can be re-habilitated by a thorough flush with a solvent such as kerosene, etc. If you find oil leaking from around this unit, you will need to replace the o-ring seal (which requires removal of the exhaust system). NOTE: all original and replacement oil level sending units have a small alignment mark case into the base of the housing, and the sending units needs to be installed with that mark aligned with a similar cast mark on the crankcase opening.

NOTE: when swapping engines (or oil pans/sensors) beware of these differences:

- the HCP700 (analog gauge) sensor is a N.C. (normally closed) style switch when the oil level is at a correct level, while the HCP701 (computer dash) sensor is a N.O. (normally open) switch when the oil level is at a correct level. Thus these sensors, If swapped between bikes, will not give proper signaling to their warning lights or read-outs!
