RUBBER INTAKE MANIFOLDS & RELATED:

Intake Manifolds, Gaskets, and Clamp Rings:

ww7) OEM and reproduction INTAKE MANIFOLDS, both original and reproduction individual manifolds and complete sets are offered to allow you to replace cracked, dry-rotted, vacuum-leaking (making carb tuning impossible......) originals. These are the vulcanized rubber-over-aluminum tubes that run from the front of the carbs to the cylinder heads!

NOTE: the reproduction manifolds are excellent quality, basically indistinguishable from the originals. However, the gaskets that come with them are a very thin paper style, much less substantial than the originals, although they probably will work okay. You might want to consider buying some of the original manifold-to-head gaskets when ordering a reproduction kit.......

ALSO---it's never a bad idea to use some of our 100% Silicone Grease as an "assembly lube" when installing any of these intake manifolds (around the inside of the lip where the carbs enter the manifold):

HCP28407 Aftermarket o-ring, oil seal, and gasket installation pure SILICONE GREASE. This small, 5-gram snap-open "pillow packet" is enough for a dozens of small seals, o-rings, and the like. Each:

HCP20861 Aftermarket industrial-strength SILICONE LUBE, in a large 16-ounce aerosol can. Concentrated silicone sprays on wet, and then dries to a super-slick, clear, non-greasy, non-staining finish. Resists moisture, stops squeeks, prevents binding on all types of surfaces (wood, metal, plastic, rubber, even fabrics). Won't wash away, protect against rust and corrosion, stable from -100 degrees up to 500-F. This fluid is also a great choice for use as installation lubricant for o-rings, oil seals, etc. (similar to our HCP1714 or HCP28407 silicone grease paste) or wherever petroleum-based lubricants are not recommended.

The intake manifold-to-head GASKETS or O-RINGS seals the intake manifold to the cylinder head mating surface. A "must-replace" item whenever the intake manifolds are removed for any reason.

Finally, we also carry the original OEM intake manifold metal CLAMP RINGS, which include the cinching screw. These are used on the carb end of the manifold only.

NOTE: all intake manifolds differ between the left side and the right side versions in two critical manners:

* intake manifolds, when installed on the engines, "curve" inwards towards the centerline of the bike.

* they also curve "upwards" (as well as inwards).

This combination of both upward and inward curvatures of the intake manifolds is why it is not possible to simply swap left side (cylinders #1 and #2) and right side (cylinders #3 and #4) intake manifolds.....some people think that you can just "flip upside down" a right side manifold and it will become a left side manifold (or vice-versa). This would be true if there were only the "inward" curvature to the manifolds; however, the "upward" curvature prevents such swapping from occurring (as the swapped-side manifold would be curving "inwards and downward")...........and you'll never get the carbs to fit correctly into such mis-aligned manifolds, and on the slim chance that you do get them to fit, you'll end up with major vacuum leaks at that joint.

NOTE: the 1982-83 XJ650/1981-83 XJ750 intake manifolds can also be successfully fitted to the 1982-83 XJ650 Turbo models, as they are the same length, throat size, and orientation as the original XJ650 manifolds.

HOWEVER, there is this major difference: the original XJ650 Turbo intake manifolds have a recessed land cut into the mounting flange (where the intake manifold fits to the cylinder head) which accepts a rubber o-ring, whereas the XJ650 non-turbo intake manifolds (above) do not have this land, and thus do not accept an o-ring. The non-turbo intake manifolds have a flat flange face designed to accept a paper gasket, which is not as strong of a pressure sealing device as an o-ring.

We recommend the use of the HCP1232 hi-performance paper gaskets which are designed to slightly swell in the presence of petroleum products (fuel), thus creating a flange seal that approximates that of the original o-ringed intake manifolds used on turbo engines. If extra security is desired, you can also use a very thin smear of the HCP3120 gasket maker material on these gaskets (although, the use of this material will make the eventual removal of the gasket extremely difficult).


NOTE: the above intake manifolds can also be fitted to the 1985-86 XJ700 non-X (air-cooled engines) cylinder heads and will work as long as the XJ650 or XJ750 Hitachi HSC32 series carbs are also used. The original carbs for the XJ700 non-x models were Hitachi HSC33 series carbs, which have larger diameter intake throats and have a wider carb spacing than those of the HSC32 series, and thus used their own unique set of (no longer available) intake manifolds. Of course, you would need to re-tune the HSC32 series carbs to perform properly on an XJ700 engine, but at least method opens up another opportunity for XJ700 owners.


OEM intake manifold gaskets are made from a standard duty, graphite impregnated paper material. We recommend the use of the aftermarket hi-performance paper gaskets which are designed to slightly swell in the presence of petroleum products (fuel or oil), thus creating a super-tight, leak-proof flange seal.

Intake Manifold Mounting Bolts:

ww7) OEM and reproduction INTAKE MANIFOLD MOUNTING BOLTS, both original and reproduction mounting bolts perfectly replace your originals. It's not a bad idea, at all, to replace these bolts whenever you change your manifolds. Use 2 bolts per manifold on all fits all XJ-series engines XJ550 - XJ1100cc, 1984-85 FJ600, and all XS1100 models. Torque specification is 7.5 foot-pounds. And please be sure to use anti-seize paste when installing these bolts!!!!

it54) Aftermarket broken stud EXTRACTOR TOOL KIT. Common problem: you snap or shear off the head of a fastener, now what do you do? Prevent these situations from happening to you by using one of our anti-seize products when installing new bolts or studs!


HCP10302 Aftermarket 6mm BROKEN STUD EXTRACTOR......this is the correct size for both the exhaust headpipe studs and the intake manifold bolts in the cylinder head, which are the most common fasteners that you'll need to use these extractor tools on. You simply pound this extractor onto the stud, and then use an open-end wrench to twist it out. As long as you have a bit of the broken stud remaining outside of the cylinder head threaded hole (in other words, the fastener has not broken off "flush"), then this tool is what's going to save your day. Super-Penetrant Fluids and Lubricants:

Sometimes, the toughest part of working on a vehicle is battling the effects of time: seized fasteners, caused by rust, corrosion, and other factors, turns what should be a 5-minute effort into a 50-minute (or more) chore, complete with rounded-off, ruined, or snapped fasteners, e-z outs, heli-coil inserts, and more.........and that's just not right.

While the proper use of our various Anti-Seize products will prevent these nightmares from occurring in the future, you're stuck in the here-and-now, and the best way to handle these obstacles is to have the proper tools at the stand-by; and in the case of fastener seizure, the proper "tool" is a can or two of our SUPER PENETRATING LUBRICANTS at the ready; a couple of squirts, a little bit of time-----perhaps some heat for those really nasty situations----and you're on your way again, hopefully not too much worse for the experience.....

Anti-Seize Paste:

xx1) Fastener ANTI-SEIZE PASTE. Yeah, it's smelly and makes a slippery mess on your fingers, but this stuff is a life-saver for any true wrencher, because it prevents problems down the road. Use it on any metal fastener that does not require a "loctite" thread-locker material to be used. This means on just about every fastener that is carb, engine case, or suspension-related! (except for carb upper and lower rack-mount screws and butterfly valve screws, which do require the use of a thread-lock fluid). If you think that it might, sometime, in the future, need to come off: use anti-seize compound! NOTE: the "base" metal material used in the different anti-seize pastes below do not determine what type of fastener to use such pastes on; it merely signifies what base material is used to create the anti-seize paste. You can use any "base-metal" anti-seize paste on any type of fastener and metal.

NOTE: the use of anti-seize compounds will result in a TORQUE-MULTIPLYING EFFECT……..the result of a reduction in friction between the threaded contact points……and thus fasteners treated with anti-seize compound should have their torque values reduced by at least 10-15% when installed into steel material, and up to 25% into aluminum materials or other “soft” metals” (such as spark plugs into cylinder heads, or almost any other type of fastener into the engine) …… note that this rule applies only to service manual torque specifications on fasteners that are not indicated to be treated with anti-seize fluid by the factory …. if the factory manual specifies the use of an anti-seize coating, then the specified torque value for that fitting already takes into account the “reduced torque” necessary.

Intake Manifold Vacuum Port Rubber Caps & Clamps:

im2) OEM and aftermarket intake manifold VACUUM PORT PLUG CAPS & PINCH CLAMPS: these are the EPDM rubber caps and their associated spring pinch-clamps that fit over the brass vacuum nipple port on each intake manifold.

Stock configurations (except for XJ650 Turbo) use three (3) caps per bike, on the brass intake manifold ports (the #2 intake manifold on XJ550 models, and the #3 intake manifold vacuum port on most other models, which has a rubber line on it that goes to the petcock). XJ650 Turbo models use 4 of these caps, on all four intake manifold vacuum ports. If you substitute a non-vacuum operated petcock like the HCP630 fuel valve below, then you'll also need an extra cap for the port previously occupied by the petcock vacuum hose.

- The following original and aftermarket vacuum port plug caps fit all XJ-series, 1986-90 FZ600 and YZ600 models, and all XS1100 models in all intake manifolds positions (EXCEPT for the XJ700-X and XJ750-X models, which uses this style plug on the #2 intake manifold only and the HCP8545 plug caps on the #1 and #4 intake manifolds).
